Prince Charles, Britain's best dressed man: Liz Hurley

London: Actress-model Elizabeth Hurley finds Prince Charles as Britain's best dressed man.
The actress, who features in "The Royals", is disappointed she isn't a "private friend" of any of the British royals, and admits she has a particular soft spot for the 66-year-old heir to the throne, reports
"I've had the honour of meeting some members of the royal family at various events, but as a private friend, sadly not. I've met Prince Charles a couple of times because I'm a patron of one of his charities and I have to say I'm a huge fan of his.
"I've always voted him the best dressed man in the United Kingdom, if not the world. His tailoring is impeccable. Phenomenal," she told Heat magazine.
Hurley was delighted to land the role of Queen Helena in "The Royals" because she has always dreamed of being a princess.
She said: "I think all little girls dream of being princesses. And I remember, as a child, I used to do an awful lot of play acting. Well, I was always a star and usually a royal one. My little brother would be a page boy.
"So, right from then, I've had it in the back of my mind that I'd be a very good queen. Obviously when this part came along, it was a slam dunk."

Shilpa Shetty - the perfect Bollywood actress to don 'gowns' at red carpets (see pics)

Shilpa Shetty looks best in gowns at the red carpets

New Delhi: Shilpa Shetty is a name that has to do everything from being sexy, hot, fit and beautifully expressive.
The lady who has defined a successful place for herself in Bollywood today is one of the divas who always remain in public's eye for how she look so damn sultry at this point of her life too.
Well, while the lady can make almost anything and everything do wonders on her perfectly cut frame, Shilpa has got ethereal charm when it comes to don evening gowns.
With those gorgeous facial features and shapely legs, the actress is a dream goddess of any designer. However, Shilpa Shetty takes utmost care in whatever she wears for her various appearances. We have seen the lady going from thoroughly formal to vivaciously sensuous at respective occasions.

At the recently held FBB Femina Miss India 2015 grand finale event, when the diva turned out at the red carpet wearing a nude Monisha Jaising gown, the fashion police definitely went speechless again.

The plunging neckline of that structured gown felt aptly well on Shilpa's curves and the lady once again appeared truly magnificent. Her look was further styled with side-parted sleek do, Farah Khan fine jewellery earrings and that fuschia coloured satin clutch adding the right pop of colour.
Having given several appearances in gowns like these, isn't Shilpa forcing us to believe that she is probably the best in Bollywood to carry such elegant outfits?
Well, at least we have no qualms and doubts agreeing to this!

Physicist Stephen Hawking to trademark his name

London: World-renowned British physicist Stephen Hawking is set to trademark his name, joining the ranks of celebrities such as JK Rowling and David Beckham who have turned their names into brands.
Hawking, 73, has applied to the Intellectual Property Office to have his name formally registered, while another English physicist, Brian Cox, has already made the move.
For Hawking, whose fame was recently boosted by the Oscar-winning success of the film 'The Theory of Everything', the primary aim is to prevent others from exploiting his name with inappropriate products.
"It's a personal matter for Stephen Hawking, it is not a university issue, but he has taken measures to protect his name and the success it has bought," said a spokesman for Cambridge University, where Hawking is director of research at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics.
Hawking has also applied to trademark his name for charitable purposes, giving him the option of setting up a foundation, such as to promote physics, or for research into motor neurone disease, which has paralysed him, 'The Sunday Times' reported.
His trademark would cover computer games, powered wheelchairs, greetings cards and healthcare.
Chris McLeod, president of the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys, said the move could be worth millions of pounds.
"It depends how successfully his advisers can license and market products and services. If he were to die, then the trademarks could be transferred to his foundation or offspring - they could be a never-ending monopoly," he said.

Egypt, Nigeria led world in death sentences in 2014: Report

United Nations:Egypt and Nigeria accounted for well over 1,000 of the death sentences announced last year, more than a third of the world's total, Amnesty International says in its latest annual report on the death penalty.

The London-based human rights group expressed alarm at the 28 percent jump in death sentences: 2,466 people in 55 countries were condemned to death in 2014. At least 607 people were executed in 22 countries last year.

Neither of those numbers is complete, as North Korea's closed-off stance means that no estimate there was available. Amnesty International also doesn't report numbers for China, where such information is considered a state secret. The Dui Hua Foundation, a U.S.-based prison research group, has estimated 2,400 executions happened in China for 2014.

Amnesty International also said it was unable to confirm whether judicial executions took place last year in Syria, where civil war has raged for four years.

The countries with the most recorded executions last year were Iran with at least 289, Saudi Arabia with at least 90, Iraq with at least 61 and the United States with at least 35, the rights group said. In Iran, hundreds more executions were "not officially acknowledged" and the total could be as high as 743, the organization said.

Once again, the United States was the only country in the Americas to execute people in 2014, the report said. Texas and Missouri each carried out 10 executions. Other U.S. states that put people to death were Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Ohio and Oklahoma.

The overall number of global executions last year dropped almost 22 percent from 2013.

"The numbers speak for themselves: The death penalty is becoming a thing of the past, Amnesty International' secretary-general, Salil Shetty, said.

But Shetty condemned the use of death sentences as a way to fight crime or "terrorism."

Nigeria announced 659 death sentences, mostly for murder and armed robbery, but a military court in December sentenced to death 54 soldiers who had been accused of refusing to join operations against the extremist group Boko Haram. The soldiers testified that they had not been properly equipped to go after Boko Haram, which has since pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group.

Nigeria's higher number of death sentences, up from 141 the year before, was also a result of more complete data offered by authorities.

Egypt announced at least 509 death sentences last year, many of them in the mass trials that have been held since the ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in 2013. The practice has brought international criticism. In one case in December, 188 people were sentenced to death in the killing of 11 police officers.

In the United States, at least 72 death sentences were announced last year.

Amnesty International also expressed concern about countries that resumed the practice of executions, including Pakistan, which reinstated the death penalty in December after a Pakistani Taliban attack on a school killed 150 people, most of them children.

"An alarming number of countries that used the death penalty in 2014 did so in response to real or perceived threats to state security and public safety posed by terrorism, crime or internal stability," the new report said.

Other countries resuming executions in 2014 were Jordan, Singapore, Egypt, Belarus, the United Arab Emirates and Equatorial Guinea, the report said. Indonesia said it would resume executions for drug-related crimes, straining ties in particular with Australia and Brazil, which both have citizens on death row there.

At of the end of last year, more than 19,000 people around the world were estimated to be living under death sentences.

Barack Obama decides to resume military aid to Egypt

Washington:US President Barack Obama told his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Tuesday that he will allow the delivery of F-16 aircraft as well as request annual military aid to Egypt, a media report said on Wednesday.

In their telephonic conversation, Obama informed al-Sisi that "he will lift executive holds that have been in place since October 2013 on the delivery of F-16 aircraft, Harpoon missiles and M1A1 tank kits," reported Xinhua.

The US suspension came after al-Sisi, then chief of the Egyptian armed forces, ousted then president Mohammed Morsi, installed an interim government and then launched a hard crackdown on Morsi's supporters. Some 700 million dollars of the 1.3 billion dollars in annual military aid to the Arab country also put on hold.

Obama "also advised President al-Sisi that he will continue to request an annual 1.3 billion dollars in military assistance for Egypt," the White House said in a statement.

Starting in fiscal year 2018, Washington will offer security aid to Cairo in the four areas of counterterrorism, border security, security on the Sinai Peninsula and maritime security, with "sustainment of weapons systems already in Egypt's arsenal," Obama told al-Sisi.

Obama "explained that these and other steps will help refine our military assistance relationship so that it is better positioned to address the shared challenges to US and Egyptian interests in an unstable region," the White House said.

Egypt is joining Saudi Arabia-led air raids on the Houthi rebels in Yemen, on top of its efforts to fight Islamist militants in North Sinai and Libya.

In his telephonic talks with al-Sisi, Obama also reaffirmed US concerns about Egypt's "continued imprisonment of non-violent activists and mass trials," the White House said.

World's oldest person dies at 117

Tokyo: The world's oldest person has died nearly a month after celebrating her 117th birthday.
Her nursing home says Misao Okawa died of heart failure early Wednesday.
Okawa, born in Osaka on March 5, 1898, was recognized as the world's oldest person by Guinness World Records in 2013.
Her Osaka nursing home says she lost her appetite about 10 days ago. She stopped breathing as her grandson and nursing home officials attended.
Okawa, the daughter of a kimono maker, said at a birthday celebration last month that her life seemed rather short.
Okawa married her husband, Yukio, in 1919, and they had three children -- two daughters and a son. She was survived by four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Her husband died in 1931.

Indian’s conviction may be reversed for spying on gay roommate

New York: An Indian-origin former Rutgers student, convicted for spying on his gay roommate who then committed suicide, could see his conviction for bias intimidation reversed after the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled that the state’s law in this regard was unconstitutional.

The apex court last week struck down a portion of the state’s bias crime statute that could win Dharun Ravi a new trial in the Tyler Clementi webcam case, his attorney said.  According to the earlier state statute on bias intimidation, defendants can be convicted of bias intimidation if their victims “reasonably believed” they were harassed or intimidated because of their race, colour, gender, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation.

However, the state Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the 2001 statute was “unconstitutionally vague”, striking down the third section of the statute that focused on the victim’s state of mind.

The ruling said that it is the defendant’s intent and state of mind that is important, not the victim’s.  A report in quoted Ravi’s attorney Steven Altman as saying that the decision directly strikes down one of Ravi’s convictions, which was based on that section.  The appeal of Ravi’s 2012 guilty verdict that included several bias intimidation charges is still ongoing.  The Supreme Court ruling also brings into question decisions made by the trial judge, Superior Court Judge Glenn Berman.

Now retired, Berman permitted the prosecution to produce evidence of Clementi’s state of mind to the jury.  Berman did not permit Altman to introduce evidence during the trial that Clementi was upset over his mother’s rejection of his homosexuality and other incidents in his life.

Berman also prohibited Altman from obtaining some items seized from Clementi’s possessions and computer, including the suicide note, Altman was quoted as saying.  “Now the argument has to be that the judge permitted evidence that taints the entire verdict,” the attorney said.  “The evidence about Tyler Clementi’s state-of-mind. Did that prejudice the jury?”

Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey, however, said that Ravi’s conviction “still stands, and it would be inappropriate to comment further given the state’s ongoing appeal of the sentence.”

The Supreme Court justices said in the 36-page decision that, “whether a victim reasonably believes he was targeted for a bias crime will necessarily be informed by the victim’s individual experiences and distinctive cultural, historical, and familial heritage—all of which may be unknown or unknowable to the defendant.”

Altman said he intends to include that language in additional papers he will now file with the appeals court because there was no way for Ravi to know Clementi’s emotional state at the time of the incidents.

Ravi was sentenced to a 30 days in jail, three years’ of supervised release, ordered to do 300 hours of community service and pay a fine of  about USD 11,000 after he was convicted in March 2012 of using a webcam to spy on the sexual encounters of Clementi in September 2010.  Clementi committed suicide days later.

Ravi was released from prison after serving 20 days.

Mountaineers returning Nepal to climb Mount Everest

Kathmandu:Climbers are returning to Mount Everest as the climbing industry recovers from last year's deadly disaster on the world's highest peak, a Nepalese mountaineering official said Wednesday.

Climbers from four teams have already been issued permits allowing them to climb the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) peak, another 11 written applications are pending and more applications are expected in the next few days, said Gyanendra Shrestha, an official at Nepal's Mountaineering Department.

The popular spring climbing season began last month and runs until the end of May.

"Last year's disaster has not deterred the climbers from coming back, instead, we are expecting more than 40 teams during the season," Shrestha said. That compares with 31 teams last year.

It was feared that the deaths of 16 local Sherpa guides in an avalanche that led to the early end of the 2014 climbing season would keep climbers away. Following the accident, other guides refused to work and climbers had to abandon their bids.

Nepal's government, which makes millions in permit fees, has been attempting to lure the climbers back. It recently said that mountaineers forced to abandon last year's climb would have their permits extended to 2019.

As well, mountaineering authorities have pledged to improve weather forecasting, security and rescue efforts. More medical staff has been placed at Mount Everest's base camp, and the government has set up a full-time office tent at the camp, with officials providing security, settling disputes among climbers and monitoring the activities of the hundreds of climbers and guides at the camp.

Nepal was criticized last year for not having a rescue plan for disasters and for not having a government presence at the base camp despite charging climbers huge permit fees.

More than 4,000 climbers have Mount Everest since 1953, when it was first conquered by New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa guide, Tenzing Norgay. Hundreds of others have died while attempting the climb.

Pakistan's former president Zardari plans to launch daughter into politics

Islamabad: Pakistan's former president and PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari is planning to launch his daughter into politics, a move indicative of strained ties with his son Bilawal.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari formally stepped into politics last year, but soon developed differences with his father over handling of party affairs.

According to party sources, Bilawal is living in London and planning to take a two-year break from politics to pursue his higher education after earlier completing his graduation from Oxford university.
"In his absence, the party needs a Bhutto to be on the forefront and Zardari has decided to introduce his daughter Bakhtawar," the sources said.

Bakhtawar is being tutored in politics by senior women leaders of the party. She might deliver her maiden political speech at the death anniversary of her grandfather Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto on April 4.

There is a little hope that Bilawal would attend the anniversary, used as a rallying point for party workers.

Zulfiqar founded Pakistan People Party (PPP) and served as prime minister before he was hanged in 1979 by military dictator Ziaul Haq on dubious charges of murder.

His daughter Benazir Bhutto was elected twice as prime minister before she was killed in an attack in 2007.

PPP is associated with Bhuttos and after the death of Benazir, Zardari announced that all his children had decided to adopt Bhutto as part of their names.

Designers can start layout-design projects on iPad, creating concepts that incorporate previously created assets and then easily move to the desktop where essential Adobe Creative Cloud tools, including Photoshop CC, Illustrator CC and InDesign CC, can be used to create production-quality work. Comp CC extends the mobile and desktop workflows enabled by Creative Profile and Creative Cloud Libraries. We tried it on several smartphones, including smartphones running on Android Jelly Bean. As we said earlier, the call quality is decent on WiFi, but on 3G and 2G it was not the best. This might improve over time. WhatsApp calling feature is currently available only on Android. It is expected to roll out to other platforms soon. WhatsApp is yet to launch WhatsApp calling officially. Since it is available for everyone, the announcement is expected soon. Quotable Quote

Obtaining mentality reduces a noble subtle one thing to the level of commercialism. You do something because you want to obtain something. That is what every shopkeeper is engaged in doing, it is not a mentality that is spiritual.
-- Swami Chidananda

A devotee of Sattvika nature offers Payasam (sweetened milk rice) to his chosen Deity; a Rajasika devotee gives as offering fifty richly-spiced dishes to his God; and a devotee of the Tamasika type offers goats and other animals as sacrifice. Difference of nature makes all the difference in the act of worship.
-- Teachings of Sri Ramakrishna

We may worship anything by seeing God in it, if we can forget the idol and see God there. We must not project any image upon God. But we may fill any image with that Life which is God. Only forget the image, and you are right enough -- for "out of Him comes everything". He is everything. We may worship a picture as God, but not God as the picture, God in the picture is right, but the picture as God is wrong. God in the image is perfectly right. There is no danger there. This is the real worship of God.

-- Teachings of Swami Vivekananda

To become conscious of divine Love, all other love must be abandoned. If we cast ourselves entirely on the mercy of God, He bears all our cares and sorrows, we can depend on His saving care and energising grace.

-- S. Radhakrishnan

A Karmayogi who performs actions in a disinterested way, is not only superior to those who do not perform action or to those who do actions in an interested manner but is also superior to a Jnanayogi.

-- Swami Ramsukhdas

There is a saying among the Bhaktas and the devotees: "O Lord, in my worship, what can I offer You, when everything already belongs to You only? There is nothing I can offer, for nothing that is here is mine. Thus, the only thing that I can do is to take what is already Yours and offer it to You." So, in their own way, the followers of the path of devotion also had glimmerings and glimpses of the truth of transcendental non-duality, even in the midst of their dualistic approach to God. It all goes to confirm the ultimate fact that One alone exists, supreme, non-dual, transcendental.

-- Swami Chidananda

Time is fleeting like the wind. Life is on the wane every moment. Life is but another name of death. There is no knowing when this body will drop off. So you should always be prepared for the call of death. Do not waste your time in vain, do not put off any indispensable duty for some future time. Even from this very moment you should try to accumulate something for the future life. Riches and property are resources for this world alone; they will not accompany you after your death. Spiritual practices and prayer are the resources for the hereafter. They are really your own possession which you can take along with you. However little that provision may be, nothing of it will be in vain; with its help you will have advanced that much further along the Way.

బ్రహ్మ సత్యం! జగత్ మిథ్యా! జీవో బ్రహ్మైవ నాపరహా ! - ब्रह्म सत्यं! जगत् मिथ्या! जीवो ब्रह्मैव नापरहा! - "Brahmam Sathyam! Jagath Mithyaa! Jeevo Brahmaiva Naaparahaa!"

"Brahmam Sathyam! What is sathyam? There can't be an end in all three kalas (avasthai). Anything that is not changing is sathyam. Brahmam is sathyam. It doesn't end in all three kalas…"

"Jagad mithya! Jagad – this prapancham – is mithya…What is mithya? you can see but it is not real. If you have eye problem/obstruction, you see double effect in your vision…you may see a staircase…but, at times, you may fall down when you put your foot. Anything that is dceiving to indryaas are mithyas…"

"Jeevo Brahmaiva Naaparahaa. The jeevan that is inside us is nothing but brahman. Why it is not said as "Brahmo brahmai na apaarahaa" He enjoys the whole jagad with these indryaas. The jeevan learns the attributes of the jagad from these indryaas and enjoys the jagad…It retains the name "jeevan" as long as he has the knowledge of the jagad. Once that is gone, that jeevan is brahmam!"

-- Parammacharya --

There are two different basic levels of consciousness; * I am a body (which is illusory (false)) or * I am a soul, (which is real). When the feeling is * I am a body, the thought process is trapped in the limitations, problems and vision of the physical identity. Its reaction to others is on the same level.

Given below is an awareness-thought-decision-action-result cycle in the case of a typical father-son relationship. You will notice the difference consciousness can make to the cycle.

Body Consciousness: I am the father. I know the most.
Soul Consciousness: I am a soul. My natural state is love and peace.

Body Consciousness: My son should listen to me as he is my own flesh and blood.
Soul Consciousness: My son is a soul too. As a soul he is my brother.

Body Consciousness: I will teach him a lesson.
Soul Consciousness: I will respect his idea also.

Body Consciousness: Father argues with son.
Soul Consciousness: Father and son discuss with respect.

Body Consciousness: Ill feeling between father and son.
Soul Consciousness: Respect maintained.

There are many who think: "I have not much attachment for the body; I do not have much passion for my wife, or fondness for my children, nor much attraction for money; I am not bound to anything; I could easily shake it all off if I willed." But when they reel under blows and counter-blows from within and without, or are tossed up and down faced with some horrible ordeal by a turn of fortune, then they are roused from their delusion and realise their hopeless plight of being bound hand and foot by the terrible fetters of Maya. Those who are endowed with good tendencies inherited from previous births find these fetters intolerable. They strive heart and soul to get free of them by any means whatever. These are the Mumuksus, that is, persons desirous of attaining Mukti, or freedom from birth and death.

-- Swami Virajananda

Quotable Quote

All water is Narayana (God) but every kind of water is not fit to drink. Similarly, though it is true that the Almighty dwells in every place, yet every place is not fit to be visited. As one kind of water may be used for washing your feet, another for rinsing your mouth, a third may be drunk, while a certain other may not be even touched; similarly, some places are fit to be visited, some only to be saluted from a distance and bidden goodbye, and so on.

-- Teachings of Sri Ramakrishna

Small Spiritual Snippet

Only he who has succeeded in merging his own will in the Will of God has a right to say, "I am being irresistibly driven to do all this; I am the machinery and He is the Operator."That can be done only by a devotee of the highest type, who knows nothing else but God. He never takes a false step even unwittingly; no wicked deed can ever be done by him; his heart remains filled with irrespressible strength and inspiration and is never assailed by despair or depression; and he is moved neither by happiness nor misery. He always has the feeling of "Not I, not I, but Thou, but Thou, my Lord." Gain and loss, victory and defeat, honour anddishonour, have all become the same to him.
