Materialism reduces human life to an inhuman race from nowhere to nowhere

Materialism is not just a liberating lifestyle, as its champions tout. It is also a worldview – and a dehumanizing worldview at that. In this worldview, we live only once, we have come from nowhere, we didn't exist before we were born, we won't exist after we die, and while we are alive, we have to simply race to get as many pleasures as we can get.. Isn't there anything more to life?
From a materialistic worldview, there isn't – we are racing from nowhere to nowhere. We are running from a point where we did not exist before birth to a point where we will not exist after death. In a sense there is no meaning to life at all. The Bhagavad-gita therefore categorically talks about how the materialistic worldview is soul-destroying. It destroys the spiritual essence of life.
In Gita (16.09) it is stated, those who accept this worldview are spiritually destroyed, they have very little intelligence. Such people delight in demoniac work; they are actually engaging in unbeneficial destructive activities. When we recognize the pernicious consequences of the materialistic worldview, then we will become more open to an alternative spiritual worldview; and when we become open to spiritual exploration, then the Bhagavad-gita stands ready as a beacon of timeless spiritual wisdom to guide us towards a life of meaning and fulfillment, towards a purposeful journey from where we are, to an eternal and eternally joyful destination. That is when our human life becomes not inhuman, where we trample over each other and destroy each other in the mad pursuit for enjoyment, but become truly humane where we see each other not as competitors but as partners in our multi-life spiritual evolution towards our source and our whole.

It is not enough if you are born a human being with all faculties working well - physical, mental and emotional. You must bring it to perfection using the discriminating intellect, just as a sculptor does, after the stone is brought to a crude shape. Everyone of you must be aware of your kinship with God, the Divinity latent in you and your immense potentiality. You can know this through the exercise of your discrimination and dispassion (viveka and vairagya). Only a human being among all animal creation is capable of this. The royal road to this awareness is shown by the Guru; not every one of the several lakh 'gurus' claiming their status are entitled to it. For, the word Gu-ru means, the one who has no darkness in him! When you are earnest, the Lord Himself will guide you. Do not despair; march bravely on. Try to fill every moment with thoughts of God, in some form or the other.
