God determines the scope of our actions, not our actions themselves

Some people ask, "If God is the supreme controller, does his controllership mean that whatever we do, he is controlling us and compelling us to do that?"

No. God is the supreme controller, but not the sole controller. By his sweet will, he has given all of us free will. And based on our individual past karma, he gives each one of us a certain area of control (known in Sanskrit as kshetra). What we do within that allotted area is up to us. Of course, whatever we do has to be sanctioned by him, but it's not impelled by him. For example, when someone becomes violently abusive, God doesn't want them to act that way – they want to, and God allows them, within their area of control. And for their grievous misuse of free will, they will duly get proportionate karmic consequences.

To illustrate how our will rests within God's will, the Bhagavad-gita (09.06) gives the example of wind moving within the sky. If we envision the sky as an upside-down bowl, then the sky determines and delimits the area of the movement of the air, not the direction of its movement – within the sky, the air can move up or down, left or right. Krishna's will is like the sky, our will like the wind. He limits the scope of our actions, but within that scope, we control what we do.

Claiming that Krishna is doing what we are doing leads to several problematic questions. Why should we be held morally or legally accountable for our actions? Why should we learn ethics? Indeed, why should Krishna speak the Gita at all?

By understanding that we are responsible for our actions, we can become determined to seek guidance from Krishna through the Gita and thereby make healthy choices.

Think it over:

When people do evil things, what is their role and what is God's role?

What metaphor does the Gita use to illustrate the relative jurisdictions of divine will and human will?

What problematic questions arise from the claim that Krishna is doing what we do?

Life may be filled with problems, but life is not a problem

When faced with many problems, some people may become depressed, even suicidal, "Life itself is one big problem; I just want to end it through suicide."

The Bhagavad-gita acknowledges that life can be filled with problems when it refers to the world as an abode of distress (08.15). Despite this starkly negative assessment of the world, the Gita's overall message is eminently positive because it raises our vision from material problems to spiritual opportunities.

The Gita explains that at our core, we are eternal souls on a multi-life journey of spiritual evolution. We have been transmigrating through various species and have now finally come to the human species. In human life, we have a consciousness that is capable of realizing our spirituality and thereby attaining life and love eternal. And the distresses of material existence are meant to prod us towards spiritual evolution by forcefully reminding us of our incompatibility with matter, of the impossibility of finding enduring happiness in a world where everything is fleeting.

Acknowledging life's problem-filled nature helps us in focusing on our spiritual evolution. But instead if we see life itself as a problem to be finished through suicide, we err disastrously. Consequently, we incur grave reactions because of the grievous karmic choice of destroying our human body that is a precious divine gift. Moreover, we subject ourselves to spiritual devolution, for we transmigrate to existences with far lesser facility for spiritual understanding.

Whatever our problems, we can rise beyond them if we become conscious of the supreme spiritual reality, Krishna, for he is expert at fixing things externally and internally (18.58).

Thus, both the misperception that life itself is a problem and the reality that life is filled with problems can be most effectively dealt with by cultivating spiritual consciousness.

Think it over:

How is the Gita's message positive, not negative?

Why is suicide a disastrous error?

How can the distresses of material existence further our spiritual evolution?

You have no friends so long as you can count a single man as foe. The heart that harbors enmity how can it be a safe abode for friendship? If you would be honest with yourselves, then must you love what you hate and what hates you before you love what you love and what loves you. (Mikhail Naimy)

Do not care for doctrines, dogmas or sects. They count for little compared with the essence of existence in each man, which is spirituality; and criticize no one, for all doctrines and creeds have some good in them. Those who have attained to spirituality can communicate it to others, can be great teachers of mankind. They alone are the powers of light. (Sri Ramakrishna)

To the extent possible, serve society. Of course, you need to take up jobs and earn your livelihood. But do not be avaricious. Be satisfied with what you get. Everyone has to leave this world empty-handed. Alexander conquered many kingdoms and seized a lot of wealth. When his end approached, he realised that he could not take even a single penny with him. He requested his minister to keep his two hands raised above the head during the final journey so that the people would understand that even the mighty emperor Alexander had to leave the world taking nothing with him. Likewise, even a millionaire has to partake of only food; he cannot eat gold. So, be satisfied with the basic necessities of food, clothing and shelter. Do your jobs properly and undertake service activities in your leisure time. The best way to love God is to love all and serve all. Sri Satya Sai Baba

The culture of Bharat has laid great stress on the teaching, Matrudevo bhava (revere the mother as God) and Pitrudevo bhava (revere the father as God). Aren't there many great people in the state of West Bengal? Aren't there many who are rich and educated? But they could not succeed in life due to lack of faith in God. It was only Ramakrishna Paramahamsa who could lead an ideal life by loving his mother and obeying her commands, due to his implicit faith and devotion to his mother. He taught people that there is nothing greater and nobler in this world than mother's love. You take the history of any great person in this world; they owe their greatness to their mother. The mother is God, verily. It is, therefore, not proper to hurt the feelings of a mother who is the embodiment of love. It is only when we develop love towards our mother that our life will become happy and prosperous. Sri Satya Sai Baba

To ascribe the material relationships of the human family to Godhead is sheer nonsense. The Lord who is beyond time and space, and prior to the Beginning and subsequent to the End, can never be described in terms of the mushroom memories of humanity, the temporary phenomena of human family and human society. Such descriptions cannot make any sense to those who have experienced the glory that is God. Do not make God modern to suit your fancy. He is neither ancient nor modern; His countenance never changes, nor His glory. Present Him, if you must, in a modern manner, in a modern style, so that He might be understood today. If a child is reluctant to swallow a pill, insert it in a plantain and offer him the fruit; he will swallow both fruit and pill. But do not change the pill itself to suit the whims and fancies of the child's taste, because then the illness cannot be cured! Sri Satya Sai Baba

Take the Lord to be your father or mother, but only as a first step leading to a lasting relationship that ends in merging with the absolute. Do not pause on the steps; enter the mansion to which they lead. The connection with the soul (Atmasambandha) is an everlasting and unchanging association. As a first step, you offer flowers, lamp, incense to worship the attributeful form. Soon, your devotion should move on to newer offerings that are purer and more valuable and worthier of your Lord. No one sticks to the slate for long; you too should feel that you must place before the Lord something more lasting than flowers and incense. You must feel like purifying yourself and making your entire life one fragrant flame. That is real worship, real devotion. Do not come to Me with hands full of trash, for how can I then fill them with Grace? Come with empty hands and carry away My treasure, My love. Sri Satya Sai Baba

All You Need To Know About Vitamin D Absorption!

Vitamin D function effectively, but people often don't consume enough. In fact, experts estimate that 40% of the population in the Western world suffers from a lack of vitamin D...

This substance is produced, among other things, by cholesterol in skin tissue exposed to sunlight, However, it is common knowledge that soaking up rays can harm our health and even cause skin cancer. This conflict is what led this article – learn about the importance of this vitamin and how to correctly use the sun to build it up in your body!

The most recommended source of vitamin D - sunlight

There is a good reason why vitamin D is also called "the sunshine vitamin," as cholesterol found in the skin produces it after being exposed to sunlight. The same vitamin helps us maintain health by helping to absorb calcium and phosphorus-2 minerals that are very important for bone strengthening, which explains why high vitamin D intake is associated with a reduced risk of bone loss, as well as cancer and depression.

Besides sun exposure, vitamin D can also be consumed through salmon, tuna, sardines, beef liver, egg whites, and mushrooms. However, if you aren't exposed to sunlight for at least 10-30 minutes a day, you should also consume vitamin D supplements. It's important to note that ultraviolet rays don't penetrate glass windows, so even if you work in an office well-lit by sunlight - you aren't really absorbing vitamin D.

When should you be exposed to the sun for maximum vitamin D absorption?

The answer is in the early afternoon, according to a study conducted in 2013. At noon the sun is at the highest point in the sky, and its ultraviolet rays are strong enough to nourish the body with vitamin D. With that being said, the recommendation many know is to spend about 15 minutes a day in the sun, but this common recommendation is not correct when it comes to the afternoon. In the middle of the day, you can make do with only 10-30 minutes of exposure, three times a week. If you are concerned about the health of your skin, it is important that you read the conclusions of a study conducted at the Institute for Cancer Research in Oslo, Norway, where it was found that the sun's rays in the late afternoon place the body at greater risk of developing skin cancer than those in the early afternoon.

Does skin color affect the production of vitamin D in the body?

The color of our skin is affected by the amount of melanin in it. People with darker skin have a higher amount of melanin, which helps protect the skin from sun damage and is actually a "natural sunscreen" that protects against skin burns and cancer. However, dark skin is both a blessing and a curse because people with darker skin need to spend more time under the sun's rays to absorb vitamin D effectively. Therefore, people with darker skin should spend 30 minutes in the sun at least three times a week. On the other hand, if you have lighter skin, it is recommended that you spend no more than 10 minutes in the sun, three times a week.

Does exposing more skin to sunlight help increase vitamin D absorb?

Because vitamin D is produced by the skin's cholesterol, exposing more skin to sunlight can help the body enjoy more vitamin D. Scientists recommend exposing about a third of the body's skin to sunlight for safe and optimal absorption - this recommendation suggests wearing a tank top and shorts and spending about 10-30 minutes in the sun, depending on your skin color, three times a week. You can wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your face, since the skin on our faces produces a very small amount of vitamin D..

Does sunscreen affect absorption of vitamin D from the sun?

Creams with different protection factors contain chemicals that reflect, absorb, or scatter the rays of sunlight, and when this happens, the skin is exposed to a lower amount of ultraviolet light. Because these light rays are important for the production of vitamin D, the protective factor may indeed prevent the process; SPF 30, for example, reduces the production of vitamin D in the body by 95%. However, if you plan to spend a lot of time under the sun, or your skin is particularly sensitive, you shouldn't skip the sunscreen, and make sure you get enough vitamin D through the food you eat or supplements. You can also expose your body for the amount of time you need in sunlight, and then rub on some sunscreen.

What are the dangers of too much exposure to sunlight?

While exposure to sunlight is important for the absorption and production of vitamin D, anything else too much sunlight, can be harmful in different ways:

Skin burns - This is the most common phenomenon of sun damage when in extreme cases it can lead not only to redness and sensitivity but also to blisters.

Eye Damage - Long exposure to ultraviolet rays damages the cornea and increases the risk of developing cataracts.

Skin aging and other changes - Sunlight can make your skin grow old and wrinkle faster. In addition, freckles, moles, and other unwanted changes can occur on your skin due to excessive sun exposure.

Heat stroke - In this state of dehydration, the body temperature rises to a dangerous level due to prolonged exposure to the sun.

Skin cancer - It is common knowledge that too much exposure to sunlight can cause skin cancer, and it is important to be aware of the issue and to ensure safe exposure to the sun. If you are concerned about the development of skin cancer in you or in people who are close to you, take this test to find out if you know how to identify cancerous moles and beauty marks.

If you plan on spending a lot of time in the sun, apply a sunscreen every two to three hours, especially if you are sweating or swimming. Do this after exposure to the sun for 10-30 minutes, depending on your skin type.

In conclusion - Regular exposure to the sun is important and natural to the body, and its purpose is to help it produce enough vitamin D. You should aim to spend 10-30 minutes (depending on your skin tone) in the sun at noon, several times a week. You can continue to consume supplements that contain vitamin D and of course, it is recommended to eat foods that are rich in it, especially in the winter months. Finally, do not forget to put some sunscreen on every 2-3 hours if you plan on being in the sun for a long time. Have a safe and healthy summer!
