Gandhi's mother was a strict disciplinarian and very pure hearted. As the saying goes, "Yatha Raja, Tatha Praja" (As is the king, so are the subjects). She had a maidservant named Rambha, who followed her values and looked after the children with love and care. One day, little Gandhi came running to Rambha and told that he was haunted by fear. Rambha told him, "My dear one, where is the need to fear when the all-protecting Ramachandra is with us always. Recite the name of Rama whenever you are fear- stricken." From then onwards, Gandhi chanted the name of Rama, and as you all know, he chanted it until his last breath. Can we ever find such noble-hearted women today? See the impact she had on the little child! It is because of such noble hearted women and mothers that young children took to the path of righteousness. Sri Satya Saai Baba..

Do not get discouraged that you are not able to concentrate for long when you meditate, or progress much spiritually. When you learn to ride a bicycle, you do not get the skill of keeping the balance immediately. You push the cycle along to an open ground, hop and skip, leaning now to one side and now to the other, and even terribly failing with the cycle falling upon you on many an attempt, before you are able to ride with skill. But once you get it, you never again have to worry about the balance. Automatically, you are able to make the necessary adjustments to correct the balance, is it not? After getting this skill, you can ride even through narrow streets and lanes; you do not need an open road. You can negotiate your vehicle through the most crowded thoroughfares. So too, consistent and steady practice will equip you with a concentration that will sustain you in the densest of surroundings and the most difficult situations. Sri Satya Sai Baba

Unconditional love doesn't mean that whatever we do is loved; it means that whatever we do, we are loved

Some people say, "If God loves us unconditionally, he should let us do whatever we want. But in the Bhagavad-gita, he asks us to do his will by surrendering to him. How, then, is his love unconditional?"

This question reflects a misunderstanding about the nature of unconditional love. God's love is unconditional in that he always stays in our heart, whatever it is attached to. He is the well-wisher of everyone, not just of the devoted or the pious. Consider parents whose child becomes a drug addict. Even though they still love him, they won't love his drug addiction and wouldn't fund that addiction. They may even restrict his freedom by sending him to a de-addiction center. Unconditional love implies that whatever we do, we are loved – not that whatever we do is loved.

Gita wisdom explains that we are at our core spiritual beings meant to relish eternal joy by loving Krishna, who is the all-attractive reservoir of all happiness. Presently however, we mistakenly seek pleasure in worldly objects that offer only fleeting pleasure. Worse still, such pleasure induces a materialistic obsession that deprives us of the ultimate pleasure of devotional absorption in Krishna.

Naturally therefore, Krishna doesn't love such materialistic actions. Seen in this light, his concluding call (18.66) to give up everything else and surrender to him doesn't imply that his love is conditional.. Rather, it conveys his loving eagerness that we redirect our heart towards him by choosing spiritually uplifting actions, not spiritually degrading ones.

When we thus understand how Krishna's love is unconditional, we won't demand absolute freedom in the name of love. Instead, we will willingly abide by his rules, seeing them as channels for redirecting our love towards him and thereby relishing joy eternal.

Think it over:

How is Krishna's love unconditional?

Why doesn't Krishna love our materialistic actions?

What does Gita 18.66 convey about Krishna's love for us?

We may be victimized, but we don't have to be victims

When we are victimized, how can we deal with the resulting devastation? By separating the victimization into its physical and emotional dimensions.

If we are physically attacked, the injury may take time to heal. Whereas the body heals itself naturally, the mind often hurts itself naturally. By replaying the victimization repeatedly, the mind torments us with questions that often have no constructive answers: "Why did this happen? How dare this person do like this? If only I had not done that, I would have been saved."

By agonizing over the victimization, the mind makes it our defining identity. Though that victimization may be a part of who we are, it doesn't have to become the whole of who we are – it doesn't have to define us; we don't have to identify ourselves as victims.

How can we avoid such identification? By gaining spiritual knowledge that reveals our higher identity and our life's bigger purpose. The Bhagavad-gita explains that each one of us is a soul who is a part of Krishna. No matter how badly we may be victimized, this identity that we are parts of Krishna is never taken away from us. When we understand that we are always meant to serve Krishna, that purpose takes us beyond victimization, for the opportunity to serve him in some way is always there.

If we keep trying to take small steps in Krishna's service, he will open new doors for us and will help us build a better life for ourselves. And ultimately by steady service to him, we will have not only a better life but also an eternal life of pure love for him. That divine love renders inconsequential all our physical and emotional wounds, and elevates us from being temporary material victims to becoming everlasting spiritual victors..

Think it over:

How does the mind hurt us instead of healing us?

How can victimization shape our identity negatively?

How does spiritual knowledge help us rise beyond victimization?

Be careful about your physical health too. Satisfy the demands of nature; the car must be given the petrol that it needs. Otherwise, your head might reel and your eyes might get blurred through sheer exhaustion. How can thoughts of the Lord be stabilised in a weak frame? Only, do not forget the purpose of this body when you are tending to it. A road-roller is fed with oil, coal and other types of fuel. But why is it kept in good trim? In order to mend the road, is it not? Similarly, remember that you have come embodied so that you might realise the end of this cycle of birth and death. For that sake, use the body as an instrument. Flying hither and thither, higher and higher, the bird has at last to perch on a tree for rest. So too, even the richest and the most powerful seek rest and peace (shanti). Peace can be got only in one shop - inner reality. Sri Satya Sai Baba
