Youth today are in great need of good company. By associating with people who use bad language and indulge in unholy deeds, youth take to bad ways. You should totally eschew bad company of every kind. You need a lamp to find a way through a dark jungle. Likewise, in the jungle of life, you need the light and guidance of good individuals to keep you company on the right path and to lead you to the right goal. Even a bad person, in association with the good, gets reformed. But a good person, falling into bad company, becomes bad. If you add one litre of milk to ten litres of water, milk is so diluted that it becomes valueless. But one litre of water added to ten litres of milk acquires higher value. When you cultivate friendship, ensure that you join a group of those who are good in their speech, behaviour and actions. Maintain only normal relations with others.

The great spiritual masters like Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Vivekananda, Tulsidas, and so on led supremely contented lives. There were numerous occasions when they would not even get food to eat. They regarded such occasions as invitations by God to observe fasting (upavasam); for them this was food for their Spirit. Through contemplation of God, they enjoyed such fasts. Whenever they were entertained to a rich feast, they considered that too as a gift from God. Whether it was a fast or feast, they looked upon both with the same sense of contented acceptance. They were not depressed by the former or elated by the latter. 'Equal-mindedness is yoga' (Samatvam yogamuchyate), says the Gita. The ancient sages practised this virtue. Equal-mindedness is the index of contentment. And this should be taught to our young people and cultivated by them. One who has achieved contentment can enjoy the bliss of Divine grace.

Forbearance endows you with strength to face the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. A person without forbearance easily succumbs to reverses and difficulties. Together with truth and forbearance, you must cultivate freedom from jealousy too. Envy is like the pest that attacks the root of a tree. Envy can destroy your entire life. We enjoy many things in life - knowledge, wealth, position, power, etc. But if the virus of envy enters our minds, it will pollute everything. Never give place to envy even in the smallest matter. If a fellow-student scores more marks than you, do not feel envious. If others do better than you, feel happy for them, rather than allow yourself to be consumed by envy. If someone is better dressed than yourself or is more wealthy, you should feel that they are enjoying what they have and you should be content and happy with what you have. To be free from envy is truly divine.

In order to live up to the high standards of morality which Indian culture exhorts, you must cultivate love, nonviolence, fortitude and equanimity. The last three guard and foster the first. Many people have succeeded with the help of the latter three qualities, to get their minds established in Universal love! Indeed, quite a large number of spiritual aspirants have also given up their spiritual ascent midway because they lose confidence in their true selves. The first faint whisper of doubt disheartens them and they slide back into a life of sensual satisfactions. They lose faith in God who is the Embodiment of Love and is their real sustenance. Sadhana alone can steel people to forge ahead on the spiritual path. The wise are buoyed up by the bliss of their genuine awareness. Hang on, persist in your sadhana, have faith in yourself and derive strength and joy only from God!

Dear Balvikas Gurus! When you teach the children, you must remember that you are engaged in a noble task for the sake of the children entrusted to your care. You must feel that you are educating yourselves when you are educating the children. For instance, when you impart some knowledge to the children, your own understanding of the subject improves. Even when you study books for teaching the children, you also derive joy from the study. Hence you must always have the feeling that whatever you do for others is in reality a service done to the Divine that resides in every one. When teachers do their duty in this spirit, they will be imbuing the children with the spirit of Universal love. Remember that the children have tender hearts and innocent minds. Only if you fill their hearts with love will the world have genuine peace.

500 People Attend Last Rites of Beloved 130 Year Old Crocodile in Chhattisgarh Village

On Tuesday morning, the residents of Bawamohatra, a village in Bemetra district of Chhattisgarh, gathered near the community pond and started weeping after they saw that a crocodile, called Gangaram, had died. The over three-metre-long reptile was buried in the village after his last rites were performed by the villagers. A forest department official estimated that the crocodile was 130 years old. RK Sinha, sub divisional officer (forest), told Hindustan Times the post-mortem was conducted in the presence of the villagers, after which the body was handed over to them. The crocodile died of natural causes. The crocodile was carried to its funeral on a tractor decorated with flowers and garlands and 500 people attended its last rites. Basawan, a villager, said Gangaram was friendly. "Even the kids of the village could swim around him and Gangaram had never harmed or attacked anyone. Gangaram was not a crocodile but a friend and a divine creature for us who was worshipped in this village," said Basawan. "He would even eat rice and dal which was served by the villagers and kids. Gangaram was very understanding. If he saw anyone swimming near him, he used to go to the other side of the pond," said Veer Sing Das, a resident of village Dhara. Village sarpanch Mohan Sahu said: "We used to identify ourselves with the crocodile as people used to call this village – Magarmachha vala gaaon." "The villagers were sentimentally attached with the crocodile. We have decided to hand over the body to them and they have buried the crocodile near the pond. They want to build a statue near the pond to remember Gangaram," said Sinha.

Don't pack what is back – the past – in your backpack If we are going trekking with just a backpack, we need to carefully decide what all to pack in it. Suppose we fill it with novels and have no space for food and water – we will get into big trouble indeed.

During our life-journey, we frequently let past hurts and issues stay in our mind. Just as our backpack's capacity is finite, so too is our mind's capacity. Just as carrying too many things physically burdens us, so does carrying too many things mentally. Dwelling on the past makes us feel hurt, wronged, helpless, resentful, disheartened.
Most damagingly, the past takes up the mental space we need to give to the present. No matter how bad our past might have been, we can always create a better future for ourselves, if we can act constructively in the present. Unfortunately, by dwelling on the bad past, we unwittingly make our present and future bad too. Such self-destructive thinking characterizes the mode of ignorance (Bhagavad-gita 18.35).
How can we stop packing the past in our backpack? A common answer is: live in the present. Though valuable, this advice is not easily practical. Why? Because our present is inextricably linked with our past and so focusing on the present may keep reminding us of the past.
To live in the present, we need to live for something bigger than the present. Gita wisdom reveals the biggest reality: God, Krishna. He is the master of all phases of time: past, present and future. Even if we don't know what the future holds, we know who holds the future: Krishna.
He is with us in our own hearts, always. If we strive to serve him diligently in the present, he can bring good even out of any bad past and lead us to a brighter future.
Think it over:
• How is packing the past in our mind hurt us?
• Why is it difficult to live in the present?
• How can Gita wisdom help us to live in the present?

Whose words we hear matters, but whose words we hold dear matters even more Suppose we are lost while driving and ask for directions. If some people give us right directions and some, wrong, our destination will be determined by whose words we value.

During our life-journey, we sometimes feel lost, not knowing what life is ultimately meant for. If we don't feel lost, that's because we have uncritically accepted the prevailing materialistic worldview, although materialism reduces our life to a doomed journey to the graveyard.
The Bhagavad-gita is a time-honored guidebook for living. If we get to hear its words, we are fortunate. But we can't tap that fortune if we don't value its message, if we instead value materialistic ideas and goals.
More important than hearing the Gita is valuing the Gita. This principle is illustrated through two individuals who were blessed to hear the Gita: Sanjaya and Dhritarashtra. They valued its message differently and courted drastically different fates.
On hearing the Gita, Sanjaya became astonished and thrilled (18.74). And he applied the Gita by becoming joyfully absorbed in divine remembrance (18.76-77).
Dhritarashtra too heard the Gita, but experienced no spiritual elevation. Why? Because he didn't value its message. He was attached to his son and to the Kuru kingdom. As the Gita threatened to expose the folly of his attachment, he neglected its words. Instead, he held dear those words that rationalized his attachments – words of diabolical advisers such as Kanaka, Shakuni's brahmin friend. Kanaka's pseudo-ethics (Kanaka-niti) held that one's own gain is considered the supreme end and all means are acceptable for achieving that end. By letting such words mold his decisions, Dhritarashtra became complicit in the destruction of his entire dynasty.
If we hear the Gita regularly and treasure its message as our foremost guiding principle, it will make our life spiritually meaningful, fruitful and joyful.
Think it over:
How are we lost in our life, even if we don't feel lost? Why did Dhritarashtra not value the Gita? What does valuing the Gita mean? How does valuing the Gita benefit us?

As long as the mind is impure, no place is secure If we move to a new place, we look for a safe locality. Similarly, we need a safe place for our consciousness – a place free from immoral temptations.

Which places are safe? Natural settings with serene, spiritually conducive atmospheres? Possibly. But even in such places, temptations may assault us.. How? Through sensual memories.
Tempting desires arise not just from the place our body is, but primarily from the place where our mind is. And our mind goes wherever its foremost impressions pull it. If our foremost impressions are of impure indulgences, we will feel tempted, no matter where we are physically. Pertinently, the Bhagavad-gita cautions that self-destructive desire is our eternal enemy (03..39) – it hounds us at all places. Indeed, self-destructive desires reside not outside, in sense objects, but inside, in our own senses, mind and intelligence (03.40).
Does that mean external places don't matter? They do. Though desires arise from inner impressions, they are often triggered by outer perceptions. So, hedonistic places where explicit sensual perceptions invade our consciousness are unsafe and are best avoided.
However, if we focus only on such avoidance, we often run into two major problems:
We may feel constantly persecuted because in today's materialistic culture, tempting stimuli are almost ubiquitous. In the absence of sensual stimuli, we may be lulled into a false sense of security and may lower our guard. And wham! Our mind ambushes us by forcefully filling us internally with sensual recollections. How, then, can we stay safe? By striving to place our consciousness at the supremely safe place: at Krishna's lotus feet.
Krishna is all-pure, all-powerful, all-pleasurable. When we remember and serve him by practicing bhakti-yoga, we access a higher happiness. And that happiness empowers us to neglect impure impressions consistently till they get permanently purged from our consciousness.

Think it over:
Why do we sometimes feel tempted even in serene natural settings? If we focus only on avoiding tempting places, what are the problems? How does placing our consciousness with Krishna protect us? https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D19832&picture=http://www.gitadaily.com/wp-content/images/Bhagavad-Gita-Chapter-10-Text-41..jpg http://twitter.com/share?text=As%20long%20as%20the%20mind%20is%20impure%2C%20no%20place%20is%20secure&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D19832&hashtags= https://plus.google.com/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D19832 http://pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D19832&media=http://www.gitadaily.com/wp-content/images/Bhagavad-Gita-Chapter-10-Text-41.jpg&description=If%20we%20move%20to%20a%20new%20place%2C%20we%20look%20for%20a%20safe%20locality.%20Similarly%2C%20we%20need%20a%20safe%20place%20for%20our%20consciousness%20%E2%80%93%20a%20place%20free%20from%20immoral%20temptations.Which%20places%20are%20safe%3F%20Natural%20settings%20with%20serene%2C%20spiritually%20conducive%20atmospheres%3F%20Possibly.%20But%20even%20in%20such%20places%2C%20temptations%20may... http://bhagavadgitaclass.com/bhagavad-gita-chapter-03-text-39

Even when bhakti doesn't make life easier, it makes us tougher

If we have a job to lift huge weights, that job can become easier if someone lightens that load or if our muscles become stronger.
Similarly, when we have to face burdensome problems, our life can become easier in two ways: if those problems decrease or if we become tougher. When we practice bhakti, we often expect Krishna to remove or reduce our problems. And that does happen sometimes. But if that doesn't happen, does it mean Krishna is not helping us? No, it just means that Krishna is helping us in the other way: by making us internally stronger.
Our inner strength depends on the default focus of our consciousness. The more we are attached to externals that are not in our control, the more those attachments weaken us internally. If we are attached to wealth as the basis of our self-worth and self-identity, loss of wealth can make life seem unlivable.
How can we strengthen ourselves? By shifting our attachment to something internal and unchangeable. Bhakti wisdom reveals the highest reality to be the one with unfading, unfailing potency: God, Krishna. By bhakti practice, we realize not just Krishna's infallibility but also our own indestructibility as souls who are his eternal parts.
By thus centering us on Krishna, bhakti strengthens us to face whatever burdens life may throw upon us externally. The Bhagavad-gita (18.58) assures that if we become conscious of Krishna, we will pass over all obstacles by his grace. This assurance's thrust is significant: not that obstacles will disappear, but that our consciousness will rise above them.
If we expect bhakti practice to make our life easier, our expectation may or may not be met. Instead, if we see bhakti as a practice meant primarily for toughening us internally, we will never be disappointed.
Think it over:
When our bhakti practice doesn't reduce our problems, does that mean Krishna is not reciprocating? What determines our inner strength or weakness? How does bhakti make us tougher?

Speak not just correctly, but also appropriately When a doctor prescribes a medicine, the doctor considers not just the patient's malady, but specifically also the patient's past case history. Sometimes, if the patient has some allergy or some other complication from the past, then a medicine can have a counterproductive effect.

Spiritual wisdom, of for that matter any kind of wisdom, is often compared to a medicine for us, souls who are currently deluded by various kinds of worldly illusions. When we start sharing wisdom with others, we take on the role of spiritual doctors who are meant to provide the wisdom-nuggets that can have a therapeutic effect for our audience.
While prescribing thus, we absolutely need to take the responsibility to know the particular sensitivities of our audience so that they don't get unnecessarily alienated by peripheral points that are make them unreceptive to core wisdom. Pertinently, the Bhagavad-gita (17.15) recommends that we practice austerity of speech which begins with speaking in a way that doesn't agitate people's minds. Certainly, sometimes truth is unpalatable, just as some medicines are bitter. But just as everything bitter is not medicine, so too every unpalatable word is not truth. Just as a patient often needs to be sweetly and gently explained the potency and the necessity of a bitter medicine, similarly, we need to speak appropriately to create the necessary foundation of trust and intellectual conviction in our audience by which they will become ready to accept the unpalatable words that we may later speak.
In communication, we need to consider not just the correctness of our speech, but also its appropriateness; when we give due attention to the context in which we are speaking, our words will be much more effective in bringing about the desired transformation.

Beautiful story…..
A very poor man lived with his wife.
~ O Henry! One day his wife, who had very long hair asked him to buy her a comb for her hair to grow well and to be well-groomed.
The man felt very sorry and said no.

He explained that he did not even have enough money
to fix the strap of his watch he had just broken.
She did not insist on her request.
The man went to work and passed by a watch shop,

sold his damaged watch at a low price and went to buy a comb for his wife.
He came home in the evening with the comb in his hand ready to give to his wife.
He was surprised when he saw his wife with a very short hair cut.
She had SOLD her hair and was holding a new watch band.
Tears flowed simultaneously from their eyes,

not for the futility of their actions, but for the reciprocity of their love.

MORAL:
To love is nothing, to be loved is something
but to love and to be loved by the one you love, that is EVERYTHING.

Never take love for granted.

A Nice story with a good moral

A kindergarten teacher has decided to let her class play a game.

The teacher told each child in the class to bring along a plastic bag containing a few potatoes.

Each potato will be given a name of a person that the child hates,

So the number of potatoes that a child will put in his/her plastic bag will depend on the number of people he/she hates.

So when the day came, every child brought some potatoes with the name of the people he/she hated. Some had 2 potatoes; some 3 while some up to 5 potatoes. The teacher then told the children to carry with them the potatoes in the plastic bag wherever they go (even to the toilet) for 1 week.

Days after days passed by, and the children started to complain due to the unpleasant smell let out by the rotten potatoes. Besides, those having 5 potatoes also had to carry heavier bags. After 1 week, the children were relieved because the game had finally ended....

The teacher asked: "How did you feel while carrying the potatoes with you for 1 week?". The children let out their frustrations and started complaining of the trouble that they had to go through having to carry the heavy and smelly potatoes wherever they go.

Then the teacher told them the hidden meaning behind the game. The teacher said: "This is exactly the situation when you carry your hatred for somebody inside your heart. The stench of hatred will contaminate your heart and you will carry it with you wherever you go. If you cannot tolerate the smell of rotten potatoes for just 1 week, can you imagine what is it like to have the stench of hatred in your heart for your lifetime???"

Harih Om. Pujya Swamiji Dayananda Saraswati ji's Wit was comparable to his Wisdom. I'm reminded of an amusing incident.
Once when Pujya Swamiji was visiting the US. One of his devotees took him to the Zoo. There was some American walking with his female friend, pointing at the various caged animals as they were going by. When they were within earshot, the fellow gestured to the lady, while pointing at Pujya Swamiji and said: "Look at this one!"
In ordinary circumstances we may feel offended, but Pujya Swamiji's classic response was- "This one can talk too!" :D :D :D

Oh Pujya Swamiji, what a Man, what a Teacher, what a Mahatma, and what a genuinely funny person :) And of course, such an important lesson to learn here, too :) Only the one who takes offense can be offended.
