The name 'Rama' is made up of three root letters (bijaksharas) associated with Fire, Sun and Moon. Symbolically, this means that by uttering the name of Rama, the fire principle will burn away one's sins, the sun principle will dispel the darkness of ignorance, and the moon principle will cool the fevers arising out of desires. Install the name firmly in your heart and sing with fervour. Do not treat community bhajans as a pastime. Singing should be vibrant, soulful, and combining feeling (bhava), melody (raga) and rhythm (tala). It should not be dull, mechanical or uninspiring. When you join tens and hundreds in singing bhajans, sing full-throated, with purity of feeling and without any bother. Be fully absorbed in the devotional process and experience ecstasy of that experience. Picture the Lord in your heart and utter His Name - you will then feel the ecstasy and you will also evoke joy in others. When everyone sings with such unity, Divinity can be experienced.

Krishna doesn't promise a stormless sea – he provides an unsinkable ship When we practice bhakti, we often expect to become freed from problems. And if that expectation is not met, we become disheartened.

Dharmic traditions often compare the material world to a vast ocean. During our life-journey, we are meant to navigate through this ocean to attain eternal life.
Just as an ocean sometimes turns stormy, the material world sometimes turns distressful. If we expect the ocean to be always calm, not even the best shipping captain can guarantee that – our very expectation sets us up for frustration. We similarly set ourselves up for frustration when we expect our life-journey to be smooth.
But that doesn't mean we have to be helplessly buffeted. The world's storminess is aggravated by our worldliness; the more we are attached to worldly things, the more we suffer when those things are threatened or lost.
Gita wisdom, including especially its recommended practice of bhakti-yoga, acts as a sturdy ship for us to sail through material existence. And this ship is unsinkable; we won't ever sink as long as we stay inside it.. That is as long as we keep our consciousness connected with Krishna, we stay anchored in the eternal, thereby buffering ourselves from the insecurity, anxiety and misery caused by the world's temporariness. Pertinently, the Bhagavad-gita (18.58) assures that if we stay conscious of Krishna, we will cross over all obstacles by his grace.
Therefore, instead of expecting that the ocean be storm-free, we can strive to stay inside the ship. Then we won't hyperventilate amidst problems, but will resourcefully re-connect ourselves with Krishna. With this revised inner focus, we will find security by staying connecting with the one who exists beyond all storms. And he empowers us to weather all storms and steers us towards him for a life of eternal safety and joy.
Think it over:
How does our expectation set us up for frustration? What aggravates the world's storminess? How does bhakti help us weather life's storms? https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D19900&picture=http://www.gitadaily.com/wp-content/images/Bhagavad-Gita-Chapter-18-Text-58.jpg http://twitter.com/share?text=Krishna%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20promise%20a%20stormless%20sea%20%E2%80%93%20he%20provides%20an%20unsinkable%20ship&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D19900&hashtags= https://plus.google.com/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D19900 http://pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D19900&media=http://www.gitadaily.com/wp-content/images/Bhagavad-Gita-Chapter-18-Text-58.jpg&description=When%20we%20practice%20bhakti%2C%20we%20often%20expect%20to%20become%20freed%20from%20problems.%20And%20if%20that%20expectation%20is%20not%20met%2C%20we%20become%20disheartened.Dharmic%20traditions%20often%20compare%20the%20material%20world%20to%20a%20vast%20ocean.%20During%20our%20life-journey%2C%20we%20are%20meant%20to%20navigate%20through%20this%20ocean%20to%20attain%20eternal... http://bhagavadgitaclass.com/bhagavad-gita-chapter-18-text-58

Materialism reduces organism to mechanism Materialism is the ideology that matter is all that exists. Mechanism is a material system or structure that works according to material laws, with certain causes producing certain effects. Organism refers to conscious beings who respond to stimuli by their own volition.

Materialism treats organisms as if they were simply insentient material particles interacting according to impersonal mechanical laws.
However, mechanisms differ from organisms biologically, experientially and philosophically.
Biologically: Mechanisms go through just three broad phases in their existence: creation, deterioration and destruction. In contrast, organisms go through six broad phases: birth, growth, maintenance, reproduction, deterioration and destruction.
Experientially: Organisms experience a gamut of emotions such as pain, pleasure, fear, hope and anticipation. In contrast, mechanisms experience nothing. A robot may clean a house as well as the owner of the house, but it won't experience any joy on seeing the cleaned house, as might the owner. Even if the robot says, "The house looks so good," it does so only because it has been programmed like that. If its programming were changed, it might say, "This house stinks" even when it is perfectly clean.
Philosophically: Why this difference between mechanisms and organisms? Because organisms have an inner source of consciousness that is the locus of experience and the energizer for bodily transformation through six phases. That source of consciousness is the spiritual essence, the soul. Pertinently, the Bhagavad-gita (13.27) asserts that existence comprises not just matter but also spirit. Matter is insentient; no matter how sophisticated be its organization – as in a robot – it can't experience matter, or anything for that matter.
When we appreciate how depleted is the picture of reality offered by materialism, we get the impetus to break free from the cage of materialism to fly free into the vast sky of spirituality, realizing and relishing our joyous spiritual essence.

Think it over:
How do mechanisms and organisms differ biologically? How do mechanisms and organisms differ experientially? How do mechanisms and organisms differ philosophically? https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D19909&picture=http://www.gitadaily.com/wp-content/images/Bhagavad-Gita-Chapter-13-Text-27.jpg http://twitter.com/share?text=Materialism%20reduces%20organism%20to%20mechanism&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D19909&hashtags= https://plus.google.com/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D19909 http://pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D19909&media=http://www.gitadaily.com/wp-content/images/Bhagavad-Gita-Chapter-13-Text-27.jpg&description=Materialism%20is%20the%20ideology%20that%20matter%20is%20all%20that%20exists.%20Mechanism%20is%20a%20material%20system%20or%20structure%20that%20works%20according%20to%20material%20laws%2C%20with%20certain%20causes%20producing%20certain%20effects.%20Organism%20refers%20to%20conscious%20beings%20who%20respond%20to%20stimuli%20by%20their%20own%20volition.Materialism%20treats... http://bhagavadgitaclass.com/bhagavad-gita-chapter-13-text-27

Working Towards Sustainability

Environmental concerns are growing by the number, and it's up to us collectively to look for ways to counter the current issues. However, in a study published by The Guardian, 2016 is said to be the year consumers stop caring about sustainability. With the drop in the price of oil, demand for crude becomes higher; making it difficult to stick to whatever sustainable plans governments have in mind. In fact, engineering and construction companies that offer support to fossil fuel firms continue to extract oil, showing no signs of slowing down. Although, despite the high demand for electronic items and oil-based machines, working towards becoming sustainable amidst these global fiascos should be of paramount importance.
So, let this post show you some effective ways on how you can help enhance sustainability around you to improve the environment.
Stay self-sufficient
We aren't asking you to cut yourself off from the rest of humanity in a shed in the middle of a forest. Instead, you should take small steps that can eliminate environmental issues as well as save plenty of money by opting for self-sufficient activities and items. Grow a garden where you can produce fruit and vegetables. Consider switching to renewable energy like utilising solar panels. Avoid disposable grocery bags and carry your own reusable bags. These small steps can go a long way in help save the environment.
Make conscious buys
When going out for groceries or buying items for the house, buy sensibly. Always consider how your daily purchases could affect the environment. Most eco-friendly items have the following criteria: • Less packaging • Locally produced and supplied • Small in size There are many people who engage in impulse buying. People tend to think that material possessions can lead to happiness. However, impulse buying also leads to environmental issues, so be a smart buyer and avoid over purchasing on things you really don't need.
Rethink your waste
Have you heard of that saying that 'your trash can be someone else's treasure?' Living a sustainable life means knowing the ins and outs of recycling by heart. The best way to help the environment is pass on the things you don't use to people who need them. Electronic waste is among the biggest issues governments are trying to counter. So, if you need to get rid of an old device, ask your network provider if they offer recycling programs where you can get great discounts when you buy a new device. It can be a win-win situation for both parties. Sustainability provides unparalleled personal satisfaction and accomplishments that help build a positive and healthy attitude.

A Nice Article about Love by Swami Vivekananda

I once had a friend who grew to be very close to me.
Once when we were sitting at the edge of a swimming pool,
she filled the palm of her hand with some water and held it before me, and said this:
"You see this water carefully contained on my hand? It symbolizes Love."
This was how I saw it: As long as you keep your hand caringly open and allow

it to remain there, it will always be there. However, if you attempt to close your fingers round it and try to posses it,

it will spill through the first cracks it finds.
This is the greatest mistake that people do when they meet love...they try to posses it, they demand, they expect... and just like the water spilling out of your hand, love will retrieve from you.
For love is meant to be free, you cannot change its nature. If there are

people you love, allow them to be free beings. Give and don't expect. Advise, but don't order. Ask, but never demand.
It might sound simple, but it is a lesson that may take a lifetime to truly practice. It is the secret to true love. To truly practice it, you must sincerely feel no expectations from those who you love,
and yet an unconditional caring."

Passing thought... Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take; but by the moments that take our breath away.....

10 Actions that Build a Strong and Lasting Character
People strive, throughout life, to build strong personal characters, traits that reflect their purpose, passions, and values. Yet, as people who would like to build a strong character, we find it difficult. The difficulty lies in our resistance to the very circumstances that would lead us to grow.
This article will provide insights into the following questions: How does character differ from conduct? How does personal character lead to the growth of spiritual character? Why is a strong character important? How can we build a strong and lasting character that will have a positive influence on the lives of others as well as our own life?
How does character differ from conduct?
Simply stated, character lies within us, and conduct is action reflecting our inner qualities and level of development. Consider the following quotes by theologian E.M. Bounds:
"Conduct is what we do; character is what we are.
Conduct is the outward life; character is the life unseen, hidden within, yet evidenced by that which is seen.
Conduct is external, seen from without; character is internal--operating within.
Character is the state of the heart; conduct is its outward expression.
Character is the root of the tree; conduct is the fruit it bears."
How does personal character lead to the growth of spiritual character?
Character, as we usually think of it, is a temporary collection of personality traits that we develop during our time on earth. We build character with each choice, and it reflects our deepest values through our actions. Our personality, with all of its brain-stored character traits will end when our physical life is completed.
At the spiritual level, we have a much broader character that can also grow; and, unlike the character of human personality, it can continue to grow stronger eternally. It is by handling the challenges of life in ways that make character strong, that we also grow stronger spiritually.
Why is a strong character important?
A strong character in daily life is a positive influence upon others. However, our character also influences our own lives, often unseen, moment by moment, for our inner state determines our actions, attitudes, and ultimate growth.
Emerson once wrote, "The force of character is cumulative." He was referring not only to the influence of character upon others, but of the expansion created in one's own spirit—in that "state of the heart" that E. M. Bounds mentioned. The development of personal character allows for the development of spiritual character. Our spiritual character can also become a lasting character if we accept the invitation to learn.
How can we build a strong and lasting character?
Here are ten examples of actions that build a strong and lasting character....
1. Practice patience when those around you are hurried.
2. Act with faith and diligence when others show mistrust or lack of commitment.
3. Be gentle when you meet with cruelty and harsh temperament.
4. Be courteous, even when others do not show courtesy.
5. Give generously to those who have nothing to give.
6. Communicate peace to those who are saddened or anxious.
7. Express gratitude for every experience and person you have known.
8. Act with self-control when dealing with those who are out of control.
9. Be encouraging to those who are discouraged.
10. Act with self-discipline, even when it is difficult to take correct actions.
This list could continue. The necessary actions will be different for each individual and will present some very important feedback for his or her inner work.
These actions may often seem very difficult. Their level of difficulty for each of us is a reflection—for our benefit—of our inner level of character development. The situations in which these actions are called for are those situations we must experience as continuing changes and challenges designed to teach us about ourselves. They invite us to begin to develop traits such as patience, faith, generosity, gratitude, and self-control. As we begin to allow these qualities to unfold within the heart, our conduct will naturally reflect outwardly those inner qualities.

All life experiences invite us to grow in spirit. In each circumstance, God's will is working to teach us about the ultimate state of love from which he created us to be unique individuals. May you experience the peace and love in His gift of a strong and lasting character.

HEALTH -- Benefits of Walking
The human body is made to walk.
Walking 30 minutes a day cuts the rate of people becoming diabetic by more than half and it cuts the risk of people over 60 becoming diabetic by almost 70 percent.
Walking cuts the risk of stroke by more than 25 percent.
Walking reduces hypertension. The body has over 100,000 miles of blood vessels. Those blood vessels are more supple and healthier when we walk.
Walking cuts the risk of cancer as well as diabetes and stroke.
Women who walk have a 20 percent lower likelihood of getting breast cancer and a 31 percent lower risk of getting colon cancer.
Women with breast cancer who walk regularly can reduce their recurrence rate and their mortality rate by over 50 percent.
The human body works better when we walk. The body resists diseases better when we walk, and the body heals faster when we walk.
We don't have to walk a lot. Thirty minutes a day has a huge impact on our health.
Men who walk thirty minutes a day have a significantly lower level of prostate cancer. Men who walk regularly have a 60 percent lower risk of colon cancer.
For men with prostate cancer, studies have shown that walkers have a 46 percent lower mortality rate.
Walking also helps prevent depression, and people who walk regularly are more likely to see improvements in their depression.
In one study, people who walked and took medication scored twice as well in 30 days as the women who only took the medication. Another study showed that depressed people who walked regularly had a significantly higher level of not being depressed in a year compared to depressed people who did not walk. The body generates endorphins when we walk. Endorphins help us feel good.
Walking strengthens the heart. Walking strengthens bones. Walking improves the circulatory system.
Walking generates positive neurochemicals. Healthy eating is important but dieting can trigger negative neurochemicals and can be hard to do.
Walking generates positive neurochemicals. People look forward to walking and enjoy walking.
And research shows that fit beats fat for many people. Walking half an hour a day has health benefits that exceed the benefits of losing 20 pounds.
When we walk every day, our bodies are healthier and stronger. A single 30 minute walk can reduce blood pressure by five points for over 20 hours.
Walking reduces the risk of blood clots in your legs.
People who walk regularly have much lower risk of deep vein thrombosis.
People who walk are less likely to catch colds, and when people get colds, walkers have a 46 percent shorter symptom time from their colds.

We miss out something called L.I.F.E.
A boy was born to a couple after eleven years of marriage. They were a loving couple and the boy was the gem of their eyes. When the boy was around two years old, one morning the husband saw a medicine bottle open. He was late for office so he asked his wife to cap the bottle and keep it in the cupboard. His wife, preoccupied in the kitchen totally forgot the matter. The boy saw the bottle and playfully went to the bottle fascinated by its color and drank it all.

It happened to be a poisonous medicine meant for adults in small dosages. When the child collapsed the mother hurried him to the hospital, where he died. The mother was stunned. She was terrified how to face her husband. When the distraught father came to the hospital and saw the dead child, he looked at his wife and uttered just five words.
QUESTIONS :
1. What were the five words ?
2. What is the implication of this story?
ANSWER :
The husband just said "I am with you Darling"
The husband's totally unexpected reaction is a proactive behavior.. The child is dead.. He can never be brought back to life. There is no point in finding fault with the mother. Besides, if only he had taken time to keep the bottle away, this would not have happened.. No one is to be blamed.. She had also lost her only child. What she needed at that moment was consolation and sympathy from the husband. That is what he gave her.
If everyone can look at life with this kind of perspective, there would be much fewer problems in the world. "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step". Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness, and fears. And you will find things are actually not as difficult as you think.
MORAL OF THE STORY:
This story is really worth reading. ..... Sometimes we spend time in asking who is responsible or whom to blame, whether in a relationship, in a job or with the people we know. By this way we miss out something called L.I.F.E

Common Sense
An illiterate father with his educated son went on a camping trip.
They set up their tent & fell asleep.
Some hours later, Father wakes his son & asks: Look up & tell me what you see?
Son: I see millions of stars.
Father: And what does that tell you?
Son: Astronomically, it tells that there are millions of galaxies & planets..
Father slaps the son hard & says: Idiot, 'someone has stolen our tent'
Moral: Education ruins our common sense.
