Be genuinely amiable when you are with others. Just be smiling, congenial, and kind. Above all, be humble. Be calm and considerate. Strive always to be understanding. True friends understand one another no matter what they do. You should be like that. (Sri Paramahansa Yogananda)

Our ancients enquired into the nature of Divinity through many paths, but were not successful in recognising the reality. Hence, they started worshipping Prakriti (Nature). Thereafter, theBharatiyas took to murti aradhana (idol-worship). Every creature that takes birth in this universe has a form (murti). Idols are inert in nature and do not possess the qualities of compassion, love, forbearance, etc. It is for this reason that some people are against idol-worship. This is ignorance. Are you not worshiping the pictures of your parents and grandparents? Do these pictures have life in them? No. Nor do they have the qualities of compassion, love, sacrifice, etc. Then what is the point in worshiping them? It is through these pictures that we are reminded of the virtues and ideals they stood for. You use your forefinger to point to a specific object, say, a flower or a tumbler. Similarly idols are like pointers to Divinity. Once you recognise Divinity, you don't need the pointers. Such being the case, is it not foolish to object to idol worship?

What differentiates spiritualists from materialists is not absence of pain but presence of healing Some people ask spiritualists, "You go through the same problems as we do – what do you gain by your spiritual practices?"

To understand, let's consider a metaphor that explains what to expect from our spiritual practices.
Consider two patients – both are sick and in pain. But one of them has been diagnosed and is being treated, whereas the other is undiagnosed and untreated. Though both of them are presently in pain, their future is dramatically different: the patient being treated will soon return to health, whereas the undiagnosed patient will stay sick or may even become sicker.
Similar is the difference between spiritualists and materialists. The world we live in is a place of misery – akin to a hospital. Everyone in this world has to, sooner or later, bear the brunt of the world's distressful nature.
But spiritualists have perceived life's spiritual dimension and are pursuing it purposefully. At that spiritual level of consciousness is the ultimate health of the soul wherein exists no mortality or misery. And those who are practicing bhakti-yoga are progressing towards that sublime level of consciousness.
Gita wisdom explains that the fundamental problem of life is not the specific problems of life we are encountering – they will come and they will go; the fundamental problem is the materialistic level of consciousness where we are trapped because of our worldly attachments. And our spiritual practices are meant to raise our consciousness to the spiritual level – not to cover our pain temporarily which is what most material solutions do and which is what we ignorantly expect spiritual solutions to do.
To the extent we become absorbed by our spiritual practices in the supreme spiritual reality, Krishna, we can experience joy (09.02) – even in this world what to speak of the next.
Think it over:
How are spiritualists like the patient who has been diagnosed and treated? How do spiritual solutions and material solutions differ? How do spiritual solutions help us even in this material world? https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D20037&picture=http://www.gitadaily.com/wp-content/images/Bhagavad-Gita-Chapter-09-Text-02.jpg http://twitter.com/share?text=What%20differentiates%20spiritualists%20from%20materialists%20is%20not%20absence%20of%20pain%20but%20presence%20of%20healing&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D20037&hashtags= https://plus.google.com/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D20037 http://pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D20037&media=http://www.gitadaily.com/wp-content/images/Bhagavad-Gita-Chapter-09-Text-02.jpg&description=Some%20people%20ask%20spiritualists%2C%20%E2%80%9CYou%20go%20through%20the%20same%20problems%20as%20we%20do%20%E2%80%93%20what%20do%20you%20gain%20by%20your%20spiritual%20practices%3F%E2%80%9DTo%20understand%2C%20let%E2%80%99s%20consider%20a%20metaphor%20that%20explains%20what%20to%20expect%20from%20our%20spiritual%20practices.Consider%20two%20patients%20%E2%80%93%20both%20are%20sick%20and%20in%20pain.%20But%20one%20of%20them%20has... http://bhagavadgitaclass.com/bhagavad-gita-chapter-09-text-02
