This is the age of science and technology. Its civilisation and culture are bound to the knowledge of the physical universe. What the students have to learn today, however, are the culture of the Soul, the broadening of the Spirit and purification of the Heart. This knowledge leads to the unfolding of the Spirit and the sublimation of life. Along with the development of the intellect, the blossoming of the heart should also be promoted. Only that education is complete which promotes the expansion of the hrudaya (the spiritual heart). It should serve to promote ethical values. Only then will it be possible to lead a well-regulated and disciplined life. The marks of true education are selflessness, humility and unostentatiousness.. The edifice of right education rests on four pillars: Self-control, Self-support, Self-confidence and self-sacrifice.

Be mindful of people's perceptions, but don't make your mind full of their perceptions When we practice spiritual life, we go against the overall materialistic current of the world. The road less travelled is the road we choose to travel. Consequently, we need to stand apart from the world, to stay detached from the ways of worldly people (Bhagavad-gita 13.11).

Simultaneously, the Gita recommends a world-embracing spirituality, not a world-rejecting spirituality. It doesn't approve of our withdrawing into our own cocoon for our spiritual growth without any concern for others' spiritual growth. It endorses an inclusive spirituality that makes us agents for spiritualizing those around us.
With this compassionate thrust, the Gita stresses that we shouldn't agitate people's minds (03.26). How can we avoid disturbing people's minds if we are not even aware of their minds? We need to understand how they are perceiving our words, our actions, our spirituality. Only then can we present spiritual principles and practices in ways that are appealing, not alienating. That's why we need to be mindful of people's perceptions.
While being thus mindful, two caveats are in order. First, we can't change central spiritual truths just because people find them agitating. Nonetheless, spirituality often comes with contextual accretions and accessories that are suitable for some people, but not for others. We need to carefully consider what is suitable for whom.
Second, we can't let our mind become full of people's perceptions. Our mind needs to be full of our Lord, Krishna. And because everyone is a part of Krishna, out of our devotion for him, we need to be conscious of their perceptions. Why? So that we can best serve them by presenting out Lord according to their level of spiritual receptivity.
By thus being aware of people's perceptions while not becoming obsessed with those perceptions, we can be both committed and compassionate.
Think it over:
Why do spiritualists need to stand apart from the world? Why do we need to be mindful of people's perceptions? While being socially mindful, what caveats are in order? https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D19922&picture=http://www.gitadaily.com/wp-content/images/Bhagavad-Gita-Chapter-13-Text-11.jpg http://twitter..com/share?text=Be%20mindful%20of%20people%26%23039%3Bs%20perceptions%2C%20but%20don%26%23039%3Bt%20make%20your%20mind%20full%20of%20their%20perceptions&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D19922&hashtags= https://plus.google.com/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D19922 http://pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D19922&media=http://www.gitadaily.com/wp-content/images/Bhagavad-Gita-Chapter-13-Text-11.jpg&description=When%20we%20practice%20spiritual%20life%2C%20we%20go%20against%20the%20overall%20materialistic%20current%20of%20the%20world.%20The%20road%20less%20travelled%20is%20the%20road%20we%20choose%20to%20travel.%20Consequently%2C%20we%20need%20to%20stand%20apart%20from%20the%20world%2C%20to%20stay%20detached%20from%20the%20ways%20of%20worldly%20people%20%28Bhagavad-gita%2013.11%29.Simultaneously%2C%20the... http://bhagavadgitaclass.com/bhagavad-gita-chapter-13-text-08-12

Just because pain is circumstantially beneficial doesn't mean it is intrinsically desirable Some people say, "Pain helps us appreciate pleasure better. Bad times make good times sweeter."

Certainly, pain can have beneficial results if seen positively. For example, being burnt deters us from approaching fire carelessly. A painful disease makes us value good health more.
However, such benefits of pain are circumstantial, not intrinsic. If pain were inherently good, we would voluntarily expose ourselves to painful stimuli. But do we consciously choose to put our legs under an oncoming truck to better appreciate the blessing of functional legs? Or intentionally lose our money and become paupers to better appreciate prosperity? Or deliberately insult our loved ones and become lonely to appreciate good relationships? Our actions show that we don't consider pain intrinsically desirable.
Seeking to learn positive lessons from pain is good, but learning the most positive lesson from pain requires unsentimentally acknowledging the undesirability of pain and asking why we are in a situation prone to pain when we long for pleasure.
Gita wisdom answers this question by highlighting our existential predicament: we are eternal spiritual beings caught in ephemeral material bodies. We are trapped in this incompatibility because of our desire to enjoy matter.. This desire is a misdirection of our original pure desire to rejoice in a loving relationship with Krishna, the all-attractive source of everything material and spiritual.
The pains we experience at the material level are ultimately meant to prompt us to redirect our desire from matter to Krishna. Such redirection is done most expeditiously by practicing bhakti-yoga. Indeed, the Bhagavad-gita (08.15) assures that if we become devoted to Krishna, we go beyond this world of misery to his joyful indestructible abode.
When we thus see both the circumstantial benefits of pain as well as its intrinsic undesirability, we can respond to pain most positively.
Think it over:
How do our actions show that we don't consider pain intrinsically desirable? What do we need to do to learn the most positive lesson from pain? What is the ultimate purpose of pain?

TRUE MESSAGE!! Read with Patience....

Speech by Chetan Bhagat at Symbiosis ...

Don't just have career or academic goals. Set goals to give you a balanced, successful life. I use the word balanced before successful. Balanced means ensuring your health, relationships, mental peace are all in good order.

There is no point of getting a promotion on the day of your breakup. There is no fun in driving a car if your back hurts. Shopping is not enjoyable if your mind is full of tensions.

"Life is one of those races in nursery school where you have to run with a marble in a spoon kept in your mouth. If the marble falls, there is no point coming first. Same is with life where health and relationships are the marble. Your striving is only worth it if there is harmony in your life. Else, you may achieve the success, but this spark, this feeling of being excited and alive, will start to die.

One thing about nurturing the spark - don't take life seriously. Life is not meant to be taken seriously, as we are really temporary here. We are like a pre-paid card with limited validity. If we are lucky, we may last another 50 years. And 50 years is just 2,500 weekends. Do we really need to get so worked up?

It's ok, bunk a few classes, scoring low in couple of papers, goof up a few interviews, take leave from work, fall in love, little fights with your spouse. We are people, not programmed devices.

"Don't be serious, be sincere."!
Safety... You will regret if you forget...!

In that context, a little chit chat.

Recently I listened to - John Lennon's "Imagine" in the MIM (Musical Instruments Museum) in Phoenix. The lyric (1971) says this.

"

Imagine there's no heaven
it's easy if you try
No hell below us
above us only sky

Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
it isn't hard to do
nothing to kill or die for
and no religion, too

Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
but I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
and the world will be as one…"

So on, the song goes on. It is one of the best loved songs of Lennon. Surely it is worth listening to. Also, if not able to visit the MIM, - to visit, read and listen at their internet site, will give lot of pleasure.

In a hallway, (I think that is where the tour guide begins the tour) on the wall next to the staircase is inscribed on a panel in two languages-

संगीत आत्मा की भाषा है

Music is the language of the soul.

Much as I like what is said of music in there, I loved more it being said in one of the Indian languages. There you go, my patriotism pops up and I can't tell which goose bump is exactly for what!

Personally I don't think patriotism / loving any country on earth, is in opposition to universal peace. But I get what Lennon was singing.

Happy Republic day!

- Lyla
