Life itself is like a limited company. All actions in it should be governed by the limits applicable to each of them. When desires are controlled, genuine happiness is experienced. Even in practising charity, limits should be observed. Your gifts should not exceed your financial capacity. Nor should they be below your capacity. If you exceed your limits, you will face financial problems later. If you are stingy, you will be withholding from those in need, what is due to them. Always remember, charity should not be limited to money alone and charity should not be indiscriminate. You must share your physical, mental and spiritual resources with those in need in your community, appropriately. Help spontaneously, according to the needs of the situation. The hungry must be fed and, clothes and relief must be given to the needy. It is through such sharing and sacrifice that the awareness of the Spirit (Atma jnana) is achieved.

9 Health Benefits Of Buttermilk (Chaas)!

Did you know that chaas is catagorised as a sattvic food in Ayurveda? The next time you get acidity after eating a heavy or spicy meal, drink a glass of chaas instead of popping an antacid. This yoghurt-based drink is both delicious and healthy, making it the perfect accompaniment to your meals. It's also a great way to cool off when the heat is unbearable!

Here are some of the amazing benefits of buttermilk (chaas).

1. Fights acidity.

If you tend to suffer from acid reflux after a meal, start including chaas in your diet. The yoghurt will cool your stomach and soothe any irritation, while the ginger and spices will help prevent the acidity.

2. Soothes the stomach after a spicy meal.
Spicy food irritates the stomach lining, but chaas can help soothe it. Milk and milk-based products are actually the best remedies for spice – they contain proteins that neutralise the spice and cool off your system.
3. Improves digestion.
The spices in chaas are excellent digestive aids that prevent indigestion and excessive burping. Yoghurt is loaded with probiotics, which encourage the growth of healthy gut flora. This will improve everything from your digestion to your immunity.

Adults require 1,000 – 1,200 mg of calcium per day, to maintain healthy bones and teeth. 1 cup of milk contains about 300 mg, while 1 cup of yoghurt contains about 420 mg of calcium. Adding just 1 cup of chaas to your daily diet can boost your calcium intake by 350 mg.

5. Washes down fats.
Do you know that feeling, when you've eaten so much that you think you're in a food coma? Drinking chaas after your meal will make you feel better, since it washes down the oil, butter and ghee that coat your oesophagus and stomach, making you feel much lighter.

6. Contains several other nutrients, apart from calcium.
Chaas is a good source of proteins, potassium and B vitamins. Each of the ingredients in chaas is extremely healthy, with plenty of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These nutrients boost immunity, improve sleep, enable hormone synthesis and much more.
7. Lowers cholesterol, reduces blood pressure and prevents cancer.

A study found that the milk fat molecules in buttermilk contain a unique bioactive protein that lowers cholesterol and has antiviral, antibacterial and anticarcinogenic properties. The same study found that drinking chaas every day can reduce blood pressure significantly.

Masala chaas recipe


• 400 ml yoghurt
• 1 tsp black salt
• 1 tsp chaat masala
• 1/2 inch piece of ginger
• 2 green chillies, finely chopped
• A pinch asafoetida (hing)
• Salt to taste
• 1 tsp lemon juice
• A few curry leaves (kadi patta)
• 2 tbsp chopped coriander

• Put the green chillies, coriander, ginger and 2-3 curry leaves in a mixer and blend them till they form a smooth paste.
• Add the yoghurt and blend using a hand blender, till smooth.
• Pour this mixture into a glass.
• Add the chaat masala, black salt, salt, lemon juice and asafoetida and mix well.
• Chill in the refrigerator.
• Garnish with one curry leaf and a few coriander leaves and serve.

Ritualists see hierarchy above equality, spiritualists see equality above hierarchy We cherish equality – we feel intuitively that no one should be discriminated against. Simultaneously, our hard-nosed, practical side cautions that some hierarchies are essential for the orderly conduct of things. For example, no one should be deprived of the right to drive, but drivers need to obey traffic cops if driving is not to be chaotic and dangerous.

On the spiritual path too, equality and hierarchy exist in a dynamic tension. Gita wisdom explains that spiritually we all are equal, for we are souls, who are parts of Krishna (15.07). We are all meant ultimately to rejoice in a life of eternal love with him. While we strive to attain love for him, we need an orderly society, which requires some functional hierarchy. In dharmic traditions, varnashrama provided a material hierarchy as a social foundation for progressing towards spiritual equality.
Every hierarchy is prone to abuse – and varnashrama is no exception. Because of the hunger for power of some privileged people, varnashrama degenerated into the terribly discriminatory caste system that made people's birth the defining decider of their life's trajectory. The Gita (04.13) itself strikes a cautionary note against such abuse, emphasizing that qualities and activities, not birth, are the determiners of one's social position.
Unfortunately, many practices that are meant for spiritual transformation become fossilized over time by ritualistic adherents. Such ritualists consider hierarchies to be the tradition's essence and deem non-conformity to those hierarchies an inexcusable deviation. Significantly however, the Gita conclusively urges us to go beyond mere ritual religiosity (18.66).
Stressing equality above hierarchy, the Gita (15.18) reveals the vision of the spiritually realized: they see everyone from the lowest social position to the highest as essentially equal. Resonating with contemporary concerns for social justice, the Gita invites us to a spirituality that is inclusive, attractive, effective.

How are equality and hierarchy both important? How did varnashrama degenerate into the caste system? How does the Gita stress equality above hierarchy?

Sorry! బసవ పురాణం కాదు. (అసలు అలాటి పేరుతో పుస్తకం ఉందో లేదో!) My mistake. Sorry!

 'షష్టాష్టకము' అన్న మాటకు reference "వరాహ పురాణము" నుండి ఇవ్వబడింది. పుస్తకం చదువుదామని లింక్ మళ్లీ చూస్తే, నా తప్పు తెలిసింది.

నంది మల్లయ, ఘంట సింగయ అను ఇద్దరు కవులు 'వరాహ పురాణము'ను రచించారని, గ్రంథపీఠికలో పుట్టపర్తి నారాయణాచార్యులు చెప్పినారు. వీరే తెలుగులో మొదటి జంటకవులట.

కావ్యదృష్టితో చూస్తే ఈ జంటకవులు ఎన్నుకున్న విషయం 'బల్బజము' అని పుట్టపర్తి అన్నారు.

బల్బజము అంటే ఏమిటి దేవా! అని ఆంధ్రభారతి నిఘంటువు కి వెళ్లి చూసాను. బల్బజము అంటే తృణప్రాయమట. In other words - it is pithless, sapless.

మరి ఆ కవులు బల్బజం ఎందుకు ఎన్నిక చేసుకున్నారంటే, కృతిభర్త నరసరాయడు,( కృష్ణదేవరాయల తండ్రి.) ఆయన వంశం వారికి 'ధరణీ వరాహ' అని బిరుదు ఉండేదట. వారి కేతన చిహ్నం వరాహము. అందువలన కృతిభర్తను మెప్పించటానికోసం -వరాహదేవుడు, ధరావరారోహకు-  పురాణకథలు చెప్పించినట్టుగా గ్రంథము రచించబడినట్టుందని, పీఠికలో ఉన్నది.

12 ఆశ్వాసములు. 2000 పద్యాలు. పైగా సృష్టి మొదటి నుండి, నాలుగు యుగాలగురించి చెప్పి, నాలుగు వేదాల సారముంటుందట. ఇది చదవటం నా వల్ల అయ్యే పనేనా!

అంతవరకైతే సరే, కాని అడుగడుగునా శ్రాద్ధ ప్రక్రియలు, వ్రతములు, మాహాత్మ్యములు ఉంటాయట. పైగా "ప్రతి వ్రతంలో స్వర్గ నరకాలు తిష్ఠ వేసుకుని" ఉంటాయట. చూసాను, సూచికలో. నిజమే, ఒకచోట వరసాగ్గా అన్నీ తిథులూ, వ్రతాలూ.

No way! Why would I want to read them!

పుట్టపర్తి ఈ జంట కవులు – గర్భ కవిత్వానికి ఆద్యులనీ, వీరికీ నాచన సోమనాథుని లాగానే, శబ్దాలంకార ప్రియత్వం, చమత్కార కవిత్వ ప్రియత్వం ఉన్నాయన్నారు.

Those too, ha!

రాళ్లపల్లి అనంతకృష్ణ శర్మ గారి వ్యాసం లోని ముగింపు మాటలు గుర్తుకు వచ్చాయి.

 "నాచన సోమునిది భావముల ప్రాధాన్యము లేక వస్తువు, రచన వీనికి జేరిన కళ. ఆ కాలమున తెలుగు సాహిత్యమున కిది నవీనము" .... "దీనికి లోగనివాడు లేడు. కాని నిదానముగా యోజించినపుడు ఇంతకంటే మంచి కళ కలదని తలపని వాడును లేడు.")

ఇంకా తొందరగా  'వరాహపురాణము' పుటలు తిప్పుతూ, ఆఖరి పేజీలో రాముడి మీద ఈ జంటకవులు చెప్పిన ఈ కందపద్యం చూసాను.
