Weakness makes us hotheaded, wickedness makes us cold-blooded We all sometimes act wrongly. But not all wrong actions are equally serious – they fall at different points on a scale that extends from weakness to wickedness. Where they fall on that scale depends on how they affect our inner defense mechanism.

Our inner defense mechanism comprises primarily of our intelligence and our conscience. Our intelligence reminds us why something is wrong through rational analysis, whereas our conscience serves the same purpose through unpleasant feelings of guilt and remorse.
In those with weaknesses such as lust, anger or greed, their lower impulses sometimes become so strong as to forcefully overpower their inner defense mechanism. But once those impulses subside, that mechanism gets re-activated. Thereafter, when they contemplate their hotheaded actions, they feel ashamed, even appalled.
In contrast, those with wickedness have no inner defense mechanism. By their repeated wrongdoings, their conscience has become deadened – they do wrong nonchalantly, hardly ever feeling bad about it. And their intelligence has been taken over by their impulses. They abuse their intelligence to cold-bloodedly plot their wrongdoings. They plan deliberately to hurt others the most, to avoid getting caught in the process and to be ready with rationalizations if they get caught.
In the weak, the inner defense mechanism is temporarily sidelined, whereas in the wicked, that mechanism is permanently sabotaged. Like Duryodhana in the Mahabharata, the wicked take a devilish delight in doing terrible things such as murdering their rivals (16.14). They need to be disciplined, even neutralized – as was done to Duryodhana through the Kurukshetra war.
Fortunately, bhakti is so powerful that it can reform everyone – even the wicked, provided they want to be reformed. If we practice bhakti determinedly, then, even if we sometimes act abominably, still, we can and will become purified (09.30-31). Such is the remarkable redeeming power of Krishna's grace.
Think it over:
What is our inner defense mechanism? How does weakness affect our inner defense mechanism? How does wickedness affect our inner defense mechanism? https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D20059&picture=http://www.gitadaily.com/wp-content/images/Bhagavad-Gita-Chapter-16-Text-14.jpg http://twitter.com/share?text=Weakness%20makes%20us%20hotheaded%2C%20wickedness%20makes%20us%20cold-blooded&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D20059&hashtags= https://plus.google.com/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D20059 http://pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D20059&media=http://www.gitadaily.com/wp-content/images/Bhagavad-Gita-Chapter-16-Text-14.jpg&description=We%20all%20sometimes%20act%20wrongly.%20But%20not%20all%20wrong%20actions%20are%20equally%20serious%20%E2%80%93%20they%20fall%20at%20different%20points%20on%20a%20scale%20that%20extends%20from%20weakness%20to%20wickedness.%20Where%20they%20fall%20on%20that%20scale%20depends%20on%20how%20they%20affect%20our%20inner%20defense%20mechanism.Our%20inner%20defense%20mechanism%20comprises%20primarily... http://bhagavadgitaclass.com/bhagavad-gita-chapter-16-text-13-15

Comparing is unavoidable, but comparing mentality is undesirable In our competitive world, comparison is almost universal. In a class with any kind of testing, who gets higher grades and who lower will be inevitably seen. Similarly, in a workplace, who earns more than whom will naturally be noticed.

All such unavoidable comparison is functional. Significantly different from such contextual comparison is the comparing mentality, wherein we constantly compare ourselves with others and start identifying ourselves according to that evaluation. If we equate our net worth with our self-worth, then we feel insecure and inferior on seeing those who earn more than us. If students equate themselves with their grades, they degrade their own confidence to do justice to their specific talents. Due to the comparing mentality, we become envious of those better than us, and we loath ourselves for not being that good. When we equate a functional comparison with a foundational self-identification, we sentence ourselves to incurable dissatisfaction.
How can we avoid the comparing mentality? By understanding that our essential identity is spiritual, beyond the world's comparisons. The Bhagavad-gita (05.20) states that those who realize their spiritual essence are not deluded by life's dualities. Such dualities often emerge or exacerbate when we constantly compare ourselves with others.
Existing above all worldly comparisons is our transcendental core. We all are eternal spiritual beings, precious parts of the benevolent whole, Krishna. In his scheme of things, we all have a role, a place, a contribution. When we connect with him by practicing bhakti-yoga striving to serve him lovingly, we are guided to contribute in the way we are best suited to. And we relish who we always were, but had forgotten because of our obsession with worldly comparison.
When we thus become spiritually realized, then, irrespective of where we stand in the world's pecking order, we steadily savor sublime spiritual satisfaction.
Think it over:
• What is the difference between comparing and comparing mentality?
• How does the comparing mentality hurt us?
• How does realizing our spirituality raise us above the comparing mentality?

You must so adjust your heart that you long for the weal and welfare of all beings, including the happiness of your enemies. You think of all beings in distress, vividly representing in your imagination their sorrows and anxieties so as to arouse a deep compassion for them in your soul. (Lord Buddha)

When we spend so much time and effort to understand the contents of our scriptures, should we not use all that knowledge to understand and experience the Divinity in us? To merely read and then teach others without putting them into practice in your life is a useless occupation – you are wasting your time and life as well! What you really need is the grace of God. In the present times, there is too much confusion. To overcome this, handle your mind very steadily and slowly, and bring it under your control. Never be in a hurry and use force to control the mind. If a cow in our home wants to go out and eat the harvest in the field, how is it tamed and brought back? We try to find out the kind of food that it is after and feed it with something even better at home. Gradually, it gives up the tendency to go out of the house. Tame your mind similarly!
