When the mind believes something is enjoyable, it stops evaluating whether it is actually enjoyable Our mind often works like a programmed device, giving particular responses to particular stimuli. Some of this programming protects us from pain. For example, if we touch something hot, our mind impels us to move away from it, even before we consciously think about what is happening.

While some of our programming works for us, much of it works against us. Prominent among such harmful programs are our mind's beliefs about pleasure. When the mind believes that something is enjoyable, it pushes us toward that object, even without our conscious intention – and even when such indulgence hurts us.
Consider alcoholics, for example. Their mind has a deep-rooted belief that alcohol is life's greatest enjoyment. Driven by this belief, they drink, even if they have resolved not to. After such drinking binges, even if they get brief highs, they also get long hangovers. Over time, the highs start getting shorter and the hangovers start getting worse. Drinking gives them far more trouble than pleasure.
Our mind may believe that indulgences such as over-eating, over-sleeping or indiscriminate net surfing are enjoyable, but are they, really? Do they leave us feeling contended and fulfilled? Rarely, if ever. Thus, experience demonstrates that our mind's beliefs about material pleasures are false. Yet we tragically choose to trust our mind's beliefs rather than our own experiences.
To protect ourselves, we need to counter our blind faith in our mind. How? By studying Gita wisdom regularly. Helping us to see beyond the initial appearances that the mind sees, the Bhagavad-gita (18.38) states that sensual pleasures feel delightful initially, but painful eventually.
Guided by the Gita, when we conscientiously practice bhakti-yoga, we start accessing lasting happiness. And such sublime experiences gradually change our mind's beliefs about happiness, harmonizing them with eternal spiritual realities.
Think it over:
How does our mind's programming sometimes work against us? How can we understand that our mind's beliefs about material pleasures are false? How can we counter our blind faith in our mind?

Even when our eyes are full of tears, we can still choose to be all ears Sometimes, life afflicts us so grievously that we feel broken, tearful and blinded by confusion and dejection. How can we move ahead when our vision is thus blinded? By seeing with our ears.

The Bhagavad-gita demonstrates this principle. At the Gita's start, Arjuna was so overwhelmed by grief that his bow started slipping from his hands (01.28), his eyes became filled with tears (02.01), and he lost all his will to do anything (01.46).
However, instead of passively giving in, he consciously turned to Krishna for guidance (02.07). And he heard the Gita's message of immortal love. That message raised his vision above his precarious material situation to his imperishable spiritual essence. As his vision rose, his consciousness expanded so that he could see that beyond his frustration was a benevolent divine plan still operational. By thus situating himself in spiritual understanding received by hearing, he became filled with clarity and energy (18.73).
Amidst tears, we too can become illumined and animated. How? By hearing Krishna's message in the Gita and letting it become our eye for looking ahead. By Gita vision, we realize that we as souls are still indestructible and that we are still parts of Krishna, who is always our benefactor. When we practice bhakti-yoga, we become tuned to hear Krishna internally in his Supersoul manifestation. And thus amidst the darkness we will find a ray of light and thus get inspired to move ahead with small steady steps.
Therefore, rather than giving in to our fears, let's be all ears for Krishna. By taking his sublime guidance, cultivating his divine remembrance and sensing his serene presence, our tears and fears will gradually go away, and our way ahead in life will become clear.
Think it over:
How did the Gita guide Arjuna? How can we see with our ears amidst tears? How will our way ahead become clear? https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer..php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D20121&picture=http://www.gitadaily.com/wp-content/images/Bhagavad-Gita-Chapter-02-Text-01.jpg http://twitter.com/share?text=Even%20when%20our%20eyes%20are%20full%20of%20tears%2C%20we%20can%20still%20choose%20to%20be%20all%20ears&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D20121&hashtags= https://plus.google.com/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D20121 http://pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gitadaily.com%2F%3Fp%3D20121&media=http://www.gitadaily.com/wp-content/images/Bhagavad-Gita-Chapter-02-Text-01.jpg&description=Sometimes%2C%20life%20afflicts%20us%20so%20grievously%20that%20we%20feel%20broken%2C%20tearful%20and%20blinded%20by%20confusion%20and%20dejection.%20How%20can%20we%20move%20ahead%20when%20our%20vision%20is%20thus%20blinded%3F%20By%20seeing%20with%20our%20ears.The%20Bhagavad-gita%20demonstrates%20this%20principle.%20At%20the%20Gita%E2%80%99s%20start%2C%20Arjuna%20was%20so%20overwhelmed%20by%20grief... http://bhagavadgitaclass.com/bhagavad-gita-chapter-02-text-01

Dear Sirs, Goood jnanopadesam.  Reg.Upanayana samskaram I would like you to exhort all those performing this Karma with so much pomp nowadays that it  turns out to be wasteful expenditure if the very purpose of this great initiation is not adhered to in letter and spirit  till the end of one's life, to get the best out of the Sandhyopasana. I blame all Brahmin community persons coming to me  in particular (myself being one) for their becoming  the prime cause for the present chaos and misery in the world, because they don't own it  to be their responsibility to pray daily thrice  for the well being of all  the beings in the entire world, as "Chathuh sagara Paryantam ....", 'Nityam lokaa Samastha sukhino  bhavanthu" etc.   The world would have been different with the cumulative effect of such prayers by all the 3 segments of Society you have mentioned.  For those who adhere to the nityopaasana, the concluding portion of Gayathri Udvaasana praying Gayathri Maatha  for "Ayuh (longevity), Prithivyaam (shelter), Dravinam (money and all siri and sampadas) Brahma Varhasam (celestial varchas), Mahyam datvaa prajaatum Brahma Lokam (and give me permanent place in Brhma Loka - meaning moksha) is a daily demand of the Loka Maatha to bless the Upasaka (here meaning who does Gayathri Mantra daily with devotion, whereas upaasana as you know is more rigorous than mere Japam) and no words can match the real effect of such regular Sandhya vandanam .  It is  a pity that those privileged to do this Japam by proper initiation as you have extolled its aspect for the benefit of the readers in particular, are degrading themselves to the position of  "throwing away the butter in their hands and licking the fingers" , to say the least.  May Gayathri Maatha awaken them to reality. Have a nice day - enquiries to everybody, Thanks & Regards, Simhadri Rao Kanakagiri 1-1-385/5 P&T Colony, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad - 500 080 Phone : 040-27612346/040-27601253(H)

Be good, be serviceable, be useful, be kind, be God-fearing — then the confidence of the people will be yours. Faith is the very breath of victory — faith in oneself, faith in the good work one has set upon, and faith in its success despite signs of failure. Attachment and hatred are the greatest enemies of progress in any work. If someone is deluded into believing that they are saving others, then woe be to them, for there is no 'other' at all! The fundamental flaw here is ignorance! If only you are wise, you will know that all individuals are waves on the surface of the self-same ocean. All are One, injury to the hand is pain to the whole body. Hence, selfless action is the ideal to be practised! Perform all actions without selfish desire (Nishkama Karma)! Desire for gain is like the poison fangs; when they are pulled out, the snake of karma is rendered harmless.
