A Lesson for Every Son‏!

A son took his old father to a restaurant for an evening dinner.

Father being very old and weak, while eating, dropped food on his shirt and trousers.

Others diners watched him in disgust while his son was calm.

After he finished eating, his son who was not at all embarrassed, quietly took him to the wash room, wiped the food particles, removed the stains, combed his hair and fitted his spectacles firmly. When they came out, the entire restaurant was watching them in dead silence, not able to grasp how someone could embarrass themselves publicly like that.

The son settled the bill and started walking out with his father.

At that time, an old man amongst the diners called out to the son and asked him, "Don't you think you have left something behind?".

The son replied, "No sir, I haven't".

The old man retorted, "Yes, you have! You left a lesson for every son and hope for every father".

The restaurant went silent.

Respect the dark within you, to keep it within you Suppose we had a serious enemy out to destroy us. We couldn't afford to take them lightly; we would need to treat them with respect. Respect not in the sense that we bow down, but in the sense that we raise our guard. By forcing us to improve our defenses and increase our strength, our enemy may make us better, despite having no intention to do so.

We all have an enemy within us: our dark side. This dark side is comprised of our lust, anger, greed, envy, arrogance and illusion. Such dark drives are stored as impressions in our mind. If we come under our mind's control, the dark impressions therein can make us act regrettably, even reprehensibly.
Because this dark side is inside us, it is like an enemy who has infiltrated us. We need to respect that dark side – respect not by submitting to it, but by guarding against it so that it doesn't take control of us and pervert us.
Thankfully, along with the dark side, we also have a bright side – our spiritual essence, our potential divinity as parts of the supreme divinity. If we take the responsibility to connect with the supreme and unleash our divinity, we become agents of positive change in the world. While this sublime potential is always present, we don't usually strive to manifest it. Only when we realize how degraded our dark side can make us, we commit ourselves to connect with the divine, thereby initially restraining our dark side and then purging ourselves of it.
Acknowledging that inside us lie both our dark side that we need to restrain and our bright side that we need to release, the Bhagavad-gita (06.05) urges us to not degrade ourselves with our dark side, but elevate ourselves with our bright side.

The feelings we experience in dreams disappear when we wake up.. The things we see when awake are also short lived. During sleep, we are not aware of the world at all. Though the body is in the bedroom, when we dream, it is direct and dramatic, like for example we may see ourselves shopping on the Mount Road in Chennai! So, the waking, dreaming and sleeping stages are all only relatively and deceivingly real. Let us say, you are coming towards the hostel at dusk singing bhajans. A boy in the front row suddenly shouts in fear, "Snake Snake", that fear will overtake you all.. It will make all of you step back. But, was it really a snake? Say a boy then looks at it with a lit torch and finds out that it was only a rope! Ignorance (the thought it was a snake and the fear) caused it, knowledge removed it. Similarly when the 'torch' lights up the world, it will be revealed to be God.

Though you do not see the roots or know how far, wide or deep they are clutching the earth, you pour water around the trunk so that it may reach the roots, is it not? You expect that when roots contact the water, the tree will grow and yield fruit. Similarly, understand that there is God, the very basis of creation; pray to Him, and He will shower fruits. The chief means by which you detach your mind from distractions and attach yourselves to the search of God are communion with God (Yoga) and sacrifice (Tyaga). Desire (Kama) must be conquered by Tyaga and Rama (God) must be secured byYoga. Desire discolours intelligence, perverts judgement and sharpens the appetites of the senses. It lends a false lure to the objective world. When desire disappears or is concentrated on God, intelligence is self-luminous, it shines in its pristine splendour, revealing God within and everywhere. That is true Self-Realization (Atma Sakshatkara)!

Let us create healthy surroundings for our bodies, minds and intellects and scrupulously eschew and avoid everything that is likely to contaminate them. This is the way of gain and wisdom. This path leads us to success and happiness here and hereafter.

You may have witnessed chariot festivals (Rathotsavam) in pilgrimage centers. Huge temple chariots are gorgeously decorated with flags and festoons, stalwart bands of men draw them along the roads to the music of blowpipes and conches, and dancing groups and chanters precede it, adding to the exhilaration of the occasion. Thousands crowd around the holy chariot. Their attention is naturally drawn towards the entertainment, but they feel happiest only when they fold their palms and bow before the Idol in the chariot. The rest is all subsidiary, even irrelevant. So too in the process of life, body is the chariot, and the Atma is the Idol installed therein. Earning and spending, laughing and weeping, hurting and healing, and the various acrobatics in daily living are but subsidiary to the adoration of God and the union with the Lord.

"Ram-Nam burns ignorance, passion and sin. With or without knowledge, correctly or incorrectly, when the word "Rama" is pronounced it showers a rain of good upon the devotee. Sri Rama is Brahman who takes one across the ocean of worldly existence. Rama is one in across whom the Yogis sport, that is, the Self within.

Without first developing devotion to Rama who is the Self, who lives in the hearts of all beings, who is all bliss and who is peerless, how can man cross the ocean of worldly life which has sorrow, pain and misery for its waves? Do thou therefore worship Lord Rama who is Vishnu and the consort of Sita who is Lakshmi. Abandon all foolishness and enmity. Take to the service of Lord Rama.

O Devotee! recite His Name, sing His glory and serve His Lotus Feet. Enthrone in your heart Lord Rama of dark hue, whose image is reflected in the heart of Lord Shiva. Blessed is the pious soul who uninterruptedly drinks the nectar of Sri Rama's Name which has been churned out of the ocean of the Vedas, which removes the impurities of the Kali Yuga or the iron age, which lives constantly on the lips of Lord Shiva, which is a sovereign remedy or unfailing specific to cure the disease of worldly existence and which is the life of Mother Sita."

Where we are doesn't determine who we are We might sometimes be at a very bad place in life. What could make our plight worse is if we had arrived at that bad place because of our own mistakes and misdeeds. We might beat ourselves down with guilt and self-recrimination, thereby feeling utterly worthless and hopeless.

At such times, Gita wisdom reminds us that at our core, we are still pure souls; we are eternally parts of the all-pure Supreme, Krishna (Bhagavad-gita 15.07). Even if the soul is covered by impure conditionings, those are circumstantial and ephemeral – just as the wind acquires the smell of the areas through which it passes (15.08).
The wind might smell foul after passing through a noxious area, that smell will soon disappear once it goes into a fragrant area. The same applies to us, though of course conditionings may take a significantly longer time to get cleansed.
Nonetheless, understanding that we as souls have a core purity can be heartening amidst discouragements caused by our dark side. And if we strive to grow spiritually by connecting with Krishna, then we can rapidly regain our core purity. Indeed, that is the power of bhakti-yoga (09.31).
Undoubtedly, our present condition is important – we can't deny it or wish it away. If we are in an attached or addicted state, we will have a long hard climb to raise our consciousness from there to the spiritual level where we can relish lasting happiness. Still, the ardor of that climb needn't dishearten us because we don't belong where we are presently, at the bottom of a dark valley – we belong at the top of the mountain, in pure love for our Lord.
Knowing that his grace can empower us to get where we are meant to be, we can gird ourselves for the climb determinedly and confidently.

Between naiveté and cynicism is the courage to trust When we are inexperienced, we may naïvely believe that everyone is entirely trustworthy. Exploiting our naiveté, self-interested people will sooner or later take us for a ride.

On being disappointed or betrayed by those whom we had trusted, we may recoil to the other extreme wherein we become cynical about everyone. We start attributing selfish motives by default to everyone, even those who are kind and affectionate. Such cynicism keeps us lonely and alienated.
Between these two extremes is the courage to trust, wherein we acknowledge that everyone has snakes inside them, as do we ourselves. Yet we also acknowledge that we have an innate need to love and be loved, a need that can't be denied forever. Therefore, we learn to complement our heart's longing with our head's probing: we open our heart gradually to some people, using our intelligence and experience. Whereas cynical people dismiss all trust as naïve, we see trust as an act of courage: the willingness to give at least some people the benefit of doubt, as we give to ourselves and want others to give to us.
Such courage is required not just in our relationships with other human beings but also in our relationship with the supreme being. The Bhagavad-gita (04.39) states that only when we have trust can we attain transcendental knowledge. Significantly, the Gita urges us to complement our trust with sensual regulation and spiritual dedication. Why such regulation and dedication? Because through them, we use our head to mold our heart into a fit laboratory for experimenting with and experiencing the results of our trust: fulfilling, loving absorption in the divine.
Gradually, our heart becomes enriched with a sublime peace, love and joy that become increasingly relishable with purification. And we realize that our courage to trust has been richly rewarded.
