Pleasure is too fragile a purpose to sustain us through life's troubles We all seek pleasure. Yet life can put us in such dilemmas and traumas that pleasure can become utterly unavailable. In such situations, if we had made pleasure our life's purpose, we may feel there's no point to living.

Such was the point at which Arjuna found himself at the start of the Bhagavad-gita. He declared that the standard measure of success and pleasure for a warrior – a flourishing kingdom in this world or the next – would not remove the grief that was drying up his senses and his very being (02.08).
Gita wisdom revealed a higher purpose for life based on a spiritual worldview. At our core, we are indestructible souls; and we are parts of a transcendental Whole, Krishna. All our talents and achievements are meant ultimately to connect us with Krishna in a mood of loving devotion while also contributing in this world to our and others' well-being.
Krishna is always present with us, within us. And our consciousness is our defining characteristic; it too is always with us. When we strive to offer our consciousness to Krishna through outer service and inner remembrance, we become empowered with an inalienable purpose. This purpose of connection and contribution, when customized according to our particular interests, abilities and limitations, energizes our life with meaning and fulfillment. The knowledge that we have an enduring connection and are making a worthwhile contribution sustains us through life's distresses. And the resulting absorption provides, as a byproduct, a deep sense of fulfillment, which is far deeper and richer than the sensuality and hedonism that are often equated with pleasure.
Thus, using our talents and interests not just to gain pleasure but to establish inner connection and enhance outer contribution, thereby making our consciousness absorbed in Krishna, is life's most worthwhile purpose.
Think it over:
Why is pleasure too fragile as a life-purpose? How can spiritual purpose sustain us through life's troubles? How can adopting a spiritual purpose empower you amid your challenges?

MANDUKYA UPANISHAD: Brief Exposé on AUM and Its Appearances
KORA KOOSRAJ

MANDUKYA UPANISHAD

1: WHAT IS AUM?
Aum ity etad akssharam idam sarvam
tasy' opavyâkhyânam
bhuutam bhavad bhavisshyad iti sarvam om-kâra eva,
yac c'ânyat tri-kâl'âtîtam tad apy om-kâra eva
AUM, the One Unified Consciousness, is everything:
This indivisible imperishable 'AUM is everything. A brief exposition of AUM follows:
All that had existed, all that is now, or all that will in future be - everything (appearing as mind-created divisions - kâra) is only aspects of AUM.
And what's beyond this threefold time-bound universe (or beyond the threefold realms of time, space and contents/events), that too is nothing else but aspects of AUM.

2: How can AUM mean everything?
Sarvam hy-etad brahma Ayam âtmâ brahma So'yam âtmâ catusshpât
AUM (Imperishable), Brahman (Universal), Atman (Individual) has four aspects/ dimensions:
All of this, everywhere, is nothing but Brahman, the One Universal Consciousness.
The One Universal Consciousness (Brahman) (appearing through Individuation) is also this Individual Consciousness (Atman).
This Atman or Individuated Consciousness has four states of consciousness through which It appears (as evidenced by our experiences).

3: First (Conscious) Aspect/Appearance
Jâgarita-sthâno bahissh-prajnah saptânga ekonavimshati mukhah
sthuula-bhug vaishvânarah prathamah pâdah
First is Waking / Gross State:
The waking state is where consciousness is outward-knowing.
Through seven limbs/instruments* and nineteen mouths/channels**,
It experiences particular gross objects and events, pertaining to the phenomenal universe. This is the first and most evident aspect of conscious experience, leading to the appearance of the gross phenomenal worlds (vishva or vaishva) and human self (nara).
*Seven Instruments: First, Consciousness manifests outward, appearing as macrocosmic physical elements such as space, air, fire, water, and earth, along with individuation of the whole (individual self) and the flow of life-energy (the vibrant life impulse in breathing).
**Nineteen Channels: Then, the microcosmic individual operates through the four functions of mind (aspects of the inner instrument of differentiation: antah-karana), which are attention, memory, egoself and intellect. Those four operate through the five life-impulses: vâyus (prâna - incorporating, apâna – evacuating, samâna – assimilating, udâna – elevating, and vyâna – circulating), the five organs of action (karmendriya - of eliminating, procreating, circulating, manipulating, and speaking/ eating), and the five cognitive senses (jnânendriya - of smelling, tasting, seeing, touching, and hearing).

4: Second (Subconscious) Aspect
Svapna-sthâno'ntah-prajnah saptânga ekonavimshati mukhah
pravivikta bhuk taijaso dvîtiyah pâdah
Second is Dreaming / Subtle:
Consciousness in dreaming state appears as the plastic consciousness of the inner world.
It operates through the (subtle aspects of the) seven instruments and nineteen channels, experiencing (enjoying/enduring) the subtle objects/events of the luminous (taijasa) imaginary inner realm:
this is the second inner state of playing out and discharge or projections of emotional/ mental contents.

5: Third (Unconscious) Aspect
Yatra supto na kancana kamam kâmayate
na kancana svapnam pasyati tat susshuptam.
Sushupta-sthāna ekîbhuutah prajnânaghana
evânandamayo hy ânandabhuk chetomukhah
prajnâs-tritîyah pâdah
Third is Deep Sleep / Causal:
Consciousness in deep sleep is not driven by the slightest desire/feeling for any particular gross/subtle objects/events, and perceives not the slightest dream sequence: that is why it is called the sweet sleep or peaceful recovery state.
The sweet sleep state of recovery (of wholeness) remains established in oneness: consciousness operating as undifferentiated unconsciousness as in a seed.
It is only made of the bliss of being whole, just enjoying wholeness or healing (as nothing is lacking).
It is (like) the mouth that swallows individual consciousness as well as the doorway back to conscious and subconscious awareness.
This is the third pre-consciousness or unconscious (prajna) state of recovery or absorption.

6: Significance of absorption and recovery as in deep sleep:
Essha sarveshvara essha sarvajna essho'ntaryâmy
esha yonih sarvasya prabhav'âpyayau hi bhuutânâm
This unconscious seed-like causal state is what directs everything from within, being the hidden intelligence of the whole existence (including the body-mind).
Although imperceptible, it rules over and monitors everything from the depths of unconsciousness. It is the source or womb of everything (the universal unconsciousness):
All contents/events of the universe originate from and dissolve back into this (all powerful, all-knowing unconscious) root source.

7: The Fourth Aspect - Spiritual
N'ântah-prajnam na bahissh-prajnam, n'obhayatah-prajnam
na prajnâna-ghanam na prajnam n'âprajnam.
Adrishhtam-avyavahârayam-agrâhyam-
alaksshanam-acintyam-avyapadeshyam-
ek'âtma-pratyaya sâram,
prapanc'opasamam shântam shivam-advaitam
caturtham manyante sa âtmâ sa vijneyah
Fourth is Turiya – Transcendental Awakened State:
Transcendental or Pure Consciousness is neither inward subtle consciousness, nor outward gross consciousness, nor a mix of both inward and outward consciousness;
Transcendental Consciousness is neither filled with unconscious mass nor an entity that is conscious, subconscious or unconscious.
Unseen by any faculties, it cannot be described or apprehended by the outward flowing instruments of consciousness, it cannot be imagined by thought: It cannot be determined by any such means.
(Yet) It is the One Self-Evident Substance/Essence of everything, wherein the world's diverse objects and contradictions (gross and subtle) are laid to rest. It is immaculate peace, unconditional love (all embracing), without any dualism or division.

That has been described as the Transcendental 'fourth' (chaturtha or turiya) state of consciousness.
It is intuited as the real OneSelf (Atman - prior to individuation of the Whole, therefore Brahman) (and not the transient apparent, individual consciousness), the True LOVE to be realized (in the heart).
Realisation of AUM is thus realisation that everything (including what is yet to be in a future now or what had been in a past now) is the Absolute Unified Mysterious Consciousness (Brahman) in a play of cosmic manifestation and non-manifestation. AUM is everything. AUM does everything. AUM experiences everything. When AUM plays at macrocosmic level, it is called Supreme Ruler (Ishvara or Purusha). When AUM plays at individual level, it appears as Pure Individuating Consciousness (Atman) and phenomenal individual self consciousness (aham, ego).
