Merely having a human form does not make one a human being; it is the conduct and behaviour that matters, isn't it? In the same manner, mere acquisition of bookish knowledge does not make one truly educated. Such worldly education is negative in nature. One must make a distinction between education and educare. Education is limited to physical and mental levels. While education is information-oriented, educare is transformation-oriented. Just as the rivers like Krishna and Godavari have their source in the ocean, education has its roots in educare. Physical and worldly knowledge corresponds to education. Educare is related to our inner feelings and purity of heart. Our matta, patta and batta (speech, song, and way of life) should originate from the heart. That is the essence of educare. Even if you acquire a number of degrees, if you lack purity of heart, you cannot be called truly educated.

Analyse your words, deeds and thoughts, and get rid of the evil ones that harm you and others. Cultivate fortitude (sahana), firm peace (shanti), and speaking the truth (satya).. The love that you have cultivated for men, women and objects must be sublimated into pure, divine worship. Then it gets transmuted as Bhakthi (Love of God). Convince yourself that the Lord is in you, as the charioteer, holding the reins of the five horses (the senses) and giving you constant counsel, as He did when Arjuna prayed to Him, to lead and guide. Then, it becomes easy for you to convince yourself that the self-same charioteer is leading and guiding all other men and even all other beings. When you are established in this faith firmly, you become free of hate and malice, greed and envy, anger and attachment. Pray to the Lord to strengthen this conviction and this faith; He will open your eyes to the Truth and reveal to you that He is the Sanathana Sarathi (Eternal Charioteer) in all. That revelation will confer on you incomparable Ananda, and grant you kinship with Creation's manifoldness.

Service has become a word of common currency, but its value is very much reduced by the hypocrisy of the users. Really speaking, only those who are afflicted with agony at the sight of pain and suffering, distress or disease, have the right to offer service; for, they are not serving others, they are serving themselves, serving to remove as quickly and as intelligently as they can, their own agony. Service to others is the medicine one needs for oneself to alleviate the distress which fills one at the sight of distress in another being. Feel that you are serving yourself, that you are curbing your own ego. Otherwise service heightens your self-esteem and develops a sense of superiority, which are both harmful spiritually.

We may be circumstantially distanced from Krishna, but we don't have to be devotionally deprived of Krishna Life sometimes puts us all in situations where we don't get what we want or even need. If we are deprived of material resources while practicing spiritual life, we may see that deprivation as an impetus to develop detachment and to intensify our devotion. But if we are deprived of spiritual resources required for practicing bhakti-yoga, how can we see that deprivation positively?

By understanding that our devotional access to Krishna depends not on the suitability of our situation, but on the strength of our intention.
Suppose we are circumstantially distanced from Krishna because, say, our professional or familial obligations take us to a place where there are no temples or devotees. Understandably, we may feel deprived of those powerful spiritual resources.
Still, intention matters more than situation. For example, we may be living in a temple, but if we aren't strongly aspiring to grow spiritually, all the devotional richness of our situation won't enrich us. In contrast, even if we are living far away from a temple, but if we have a strong intention to move toward Krishna, then we can feel his presence wherever we are. After all, he is present in our own hearts, and is the giver of knowledge, remembrance and forgetfulness (Bhagavad-gita 15.15).
He can enrich us with his remembrance from within or enable us to relish other resources such as books, podcasts and videos. Not only that, he can even empower us to find spiritually inclined souls in our particular situation and inspire them to move forward in their spiritual journey, thereby making us instruments in creating spiritual association where none existed earlier.
By thus understanding that we are never devotionally deprived of Krishna, we can stay positive and purposeful in our bhakti practices in all situations.
Think it over:
In spiritual life, how does intention matter more than situation? When we are circumstantially distanced from Krishna, how may he help us? Do you have any experience of inner enrichment amidst outer impoverishment?

To be caught unawares occasionally is condonable, to be caught unawares repeatedly is condemnable Suppose a person who runs a ferry gets caught in a storm because they don't know that the sea tends to be stormy in that season. If that were the first time they were caught unawares, that lapse would be understandable and condonable. However, if they let themselves be caught unawares repeatedly, that would be reproachable and condemnable.

Gita wisdom explains that we all are souls navigating our way through this ocean of material existence where the storms of sensual temptation often occur. The Bhagavad-gita (02.67) cautions that just as a stormy wind sweeps away a boat, the stormy desire generated when we contemplate tempting objects can sweep us away.
In an ocean, storms occur on their own, without being triggered by the boatman. In the ocean of material existence, however, most storms are triggered by us. How? By our contemplating tempting objects. Such contemplation activates and aggravates worldly desires that rapidly become stormy, drowning us in delusion and degradation.
If we didn't know the danger of such contemplation and were swept away, that would be condonable. Still, we sometimes contemplate sense objects nonchalantly, believing that we can get the pleasure of titillation while avoiding the trouble of delusion and degradation. Such foolhardiness will sweep us away, sooner or later. And if we get swept away repeatedly, our nonchalance would be condemnable, for we would have courted our own corruption.
That's why we need to carefully avoid giving undue attention to tempting objects. And since we are always conscious of something, the only effective way to stop giving our attention to something is by giving our attention to something else. And the best object to give our attention to is the all-pure, all-potent, all-loving ultimate reality, Krishna.
By absorption in Krishna, we gradually become immune to sensual temptation..

How can stormy desires sweep us away? How do we ourselves trigger the storm of desire? Which storm do you trigger? How can you avoid doing so?

When we resist our urges, they may become scarier, but they don't become stronger Suppose an animal trainer is domesticating a wild tiger by starving it till it becomes compliant. Like all other living beings that are kept hungry, the tiger becomes distressed and then angered. Unlike most other living beings, however, the tiger's anger makes it look and sound ferocious. If the trainer is inexperienced, they may become unnerved and feed the roaring tiger without waiting till it becomes compliant. But if the trainer is experienced, they will persist in the starvation campaign. Eventually, the tiger's growling and prowling will decrease because of weakness. Then, the same hunger that earlier made it so threatening makes it submissive, begging for food. .

We need a similar strategy when dealing with our wild urges, especially our urges to do immoral, self-destructive things. Such urges are like tigers – just as tigers can devour humans, our baser urges can devour our humanity. Just as tigers need to be starved till they become compliant, we too need to starve our urges. Indeed, the Gita declares that those who tolerate their urges gradually free themselves from those urges, eventually becoming situated in happiness and spiritual consciousness.
Unfortunately, our starving urges intimidate us like starving tigers: they growl and prowl inside our consciousness, threatening us with a life of torment if we don't satisfy them, and satisfy them right away. Most often, we cower and give in. To choose a healthier alternative, The key secret is to understand that though they may sound and look scarier, they aren't becoming stronger, but are becoming weaker.
To not be alarmed by our urges, we need to absorb ourselves in something higher. Bhakti wisdom offers us the all-attractive supreme, Krishna, as the object for absorption. By cultivating such absorption, we can slowly but surely go beyond our urges.
Think it over:
When we starve our urges, how is their response deceptive? How can we go beyond our urges? Which urge intimidates you the most when unsatisfied? How can you neglect it?

Thinking that thinking is troublesome, is troublesome Some people avoid thinking about life's big questions: "What is life meant for? What happens after death? What really counts?" Deeming such thinking ultimately inconclusive, confusing and troublesome, they put it off.

However, the results of not thinking are also troublesome, unavoidably troublesome. Whatever else we think and work for in our lives, we will lose all of that at the time of death.
Some people counter, "Why lose the opportunity to enjoy life now by thinking about things like death that can anyway not be avoided?"
However, the fact is that we humans can't really enjoy life without having a deep purpose. Animals can live driven by survival instinct. But if we live only for survival and for the associated animalistic survival drives of eating, sleeping, mating and defending, then we end up degenerating toward a life of ennui, depression, addiction and self-destruction. Without a higher purpose, we don't just hurt ourselves and live miserably; we also bring out our worst and hurt others too. As an example, the earth's ecological future is endangered largely by us humans, not by any other species – by our human search for enjoyment, leading to indiscriminate exploitation and the concomitant unintended disruption of delicate natural balances in our biosphere.
Thinking deeply to discover a sublime purpose of life infuses our life even in this world with meaning and fulfillment. Living as if life has a higher non-material purpose benefits us even in this life, leave alone in the next. For discovering such purpose, Gita wisdom stands ready as a time-tested guidebook.
Pertinently, the Bhagavad-gita (13.12) declares philosophical inquiry to explore life's spiritual side to be the concluding characteristic of knowledge. When we reject the preconception that deep thinking is troublesome, we discover that deep thinking guards us from being troublesome for ourselves and for others too.

How is not thinking troublesome? How does thinking benefit us in this world?
