Problems may get stuck inside us, but we don't have to get stuck inside them Suppose someone writes an abusive graffiti on the wall of our house. We will naturally be annoyed. Suppose further that graffiti is written with indelible material. On finding that we just can't erase it, we would feel even more irritated. But suppose we keep thinking about that distressing message; such repeated thinking will hurt us the most. More troubling than the graffiti stuck on our wall is our getting stuck in the graffiti by thinking repeatedly about it.
What applies to graffiti on a wall also applies to problems inside our consciousness. Having problems is troublesome. Even more troublesome is those problems getting stuck in our consciousness because we just can't stop thinking about them. But most troublesome is our getting stuck inside problems by our fixation on them till they grow so big as to dwarf, dishearten and disempower us.
How can we deal with such problems? By focusing on doing whatever is in our power.
We can't avoid problems entirely – the world is a tough place. Sometimes, we can't even avoid thoughts of problems – some problems come with inbuilt glue that makes them stick inside us. But we can prevent problems from growing disproportionately inside us. How? By refusing to obsess over them and by focusing our consciousness elsewhere.
The best object to focus is the all-attractive supreme, Krishna. Thinking about him provides peace, power and perspective, thereby making problems more manageable. And by regularly practicing bhakti-yoga, which centers on remembering him, we can make our consciousness attached to him.
With such devotional attachment, we can more easily unglue our consciousness from problems and focus on Krishna, thereby becoming empowered to deal with those problems more effectively. No wonder the Bhagavad-gita (18.58) assures that those who become conscious of Krishna cross over problems.

How is our mind like a wall with graffiti written on it? When dealing with problems, what is in our control and what isn't? We can never start in our life unless we start with our life Suppose we wanted to walk somewhere, but we took several wrong turns and ended up far away from where we wanted to be. If we still want to get to our destination, we need to start with where we presently are.
To start in our life means to begin moving in our life toward some worthwhile purpose. To start with our life means to begin that journey of self-improvement by accepting our present state without denial or resentment.
If we deny our current situation, imagining that it isn't as bad as it actually is, then our feet are way above the ground and we can't take solid steps toward any destination. Veering to the other extreme, if we resent our current situation, much of our energy gets dissipated in beating ourselves and burying ourselves in the ground where we stand, leaving us with little energy to move forward.
To bring about self-transformation, we need to begin with self-acceptance. Unfortunately, we can't accept ourselves because of thought-patterns such as daydreaming, fearfulness, lamentation, moroseness and illusion – all of which characterize a perverse determination in the mode of ignorance (Bhagavad-gita 18.35).
How can we learn to accept ourselves? First, by understanding that we are our only resource. To the extent we accept ourselves, to that extent we become accessible to ourselves for self-transformation.
Second, by raising our vision from ourselves, with all our imperfections, to our source: Krishna, who is pure and perfect. He accepts us, as we are. He stays with us in our heart as the Supersoul. He provides us various resources to bring out our best. If he can accept us as we are, why shouldn't we?
When we thus start with our life, we gain a wealth of resources, human and divine, for creating a better life.

We don't have to outweigh our urges; we just have to out-wait them Suppose a big bully is trying to barge into our house to abuse and rob us. They are yelling at us to open the door, banging on the door and kicking and hitting the door. Suppose further that the door has a loose bolt that we need to physically hold in place to keep the door closed. If we let go of the bolt, the blows of the bully from outside will cause the bolt to slide open, letting the bully break in.

Suppose that the door is too strong to be broken by the bully. If we just hold the bolt in place, they will eventually become bruised and exhausted and will be forced to give up and go away. To persevere despite the bully's intimidation, we need to remind ourselves that our confrontation with them is a test not of power, but of patience. We don't have to be stronger than them; we just have to wait longer than them.
Our lower urges are like such a bully that we need to outwait, not outweigh. When they hit us, they can feel so strong as to be utterly overwhelming. But those urges can't hurt us unless they break into our consciousness. Blocking their entry is the door to our consciousness. The bolt to that door is our intention to pay attention. Whatever thought, idea, desire pops up at the periphery of our consciousness can't control us unless we give it our attention.
All we need to do is consciously redirect our attention toward something else, something higher, preferably the all-attractive supreme, Krishna. Then, the urge will keep battering at the door of our consciousness – in vain. Pertinently, the Bhagavad-gita (05.23) assures that if we tolerate our urges, our consciousness will gradually become satisfied and spirtualized.

To fulfil Mother Easwaramma's three noble desires, I provided drinking water not only to Puttaparthi but to all the surrounding villages too. The small school that I established is now a big university. The small hospital that I constructed has now become a Super Speciality hospital. Mother Easwaramma shed tears of joy when she saw that her only desires were fulfilled in a grand manner. She led a life of happiness and contentment and breathed her last peacefully. The first and foremost duty of every child is to fulfil the wishes of one's mother and make her happy. Secondly, serve all to the extent possible. You need not take up any service activity beyond your means and capacity. Thirdly, if you find your neighbours suffering, give them solace. Try to help and make them happy. This is what I expect from you. I exhort all of you to practice these three principles of service, experience bliss and share it with one and all.

There is no love greater than mother's love in this world. It is imbued with immense power. But such a sacred principle of mother's love is being neglected today. Mothers are being treated like servants. When parents grow old, they should be looked after with love and care. Instead they are being sent to old age homes. One who ill-treats his parents is bound to suffer a similar fate at the hands of his children. As is the feeling, so is the result (Yad bhavam tad bhavati). Whatever actions you do, they will come back to you as reaction, reflection and resound. Love your mother. Then you will be loved by all. As is the seed, so is the sapling. Hence, first and foremost, develop sacred and selfless love. Be careful to not taint your love with selfishness and self-interest. When everyone shares pure love with each other, the whole world will be filled with happiness, peace and joy.
