There is no life on that planet

No, sir! there isn't.

Whichever way you look at

There is a casket.

Every month, a squad comes

They junk a recently dead writer's body,

They strew his/her writings,

Some audio tapes around,

Then they leave.

In this Telugu Literary Magazine-

A planet spinning out of control in the orbit

Their commanders' leanings are strongly towards death.

Alas! They love death more than Life.

Their culture mandates the Living to pay respects to the dead.

There Newly Dead Writers rule and rise night by night;

They read - the living

writers' - Death Tributes- first,

Then, there is more.

Death in India, death in Urdu, Suicides

Death of prostitutes, Death of johns

Death here.  Death there.

It's all about death, Sir! The editorial team

Are all out for death and debris!

Sure it stinks.

But they have cultural anosmia.

B&N book store

When I went to Barnes and Noble, the other day, as usual it is so festive.

I looked at all new arrivals, new in paperbacks, the discounts on hard covers, and the perennial favorites on special sales, buy one get one free book deals.  My eyes are feasting on the colorful book displays on so many tables. There are hundreds of authors in the store. Alive. Alive. Lively. Full of life.

I was absolutely pleased there is a desk totally devoted – to new books with new titles, every one of them having the word 'fuck' or 'shit' in them. I knew the word -fuck- is going to hit it big. I knew any writer with a word block, poverty of thought, can use that word and it improves the sentence automatically. I knew -shit- also had potential.  But I did not know these words are going to hit it this big. It is like knowing Amazon will make it, but not knowing Bezos will be No.1 Billionaire at some point.

Anyway, I wanted to photograph that desk with that delightful display. Having forgotten my cell phone, I could not. I hope to make another trip soon. To take a photo I mean. It is worth it. I may not see such frivolous opulent jocose jackass irreverent ribaldry in one place again. Who knows some kind of 'movement' people may come around and say move this F and S off the table, and they may have to.

Never mind all that side tracking, the thing is, I had a mission when I went in. I went to get Dodsworth written by Sinclair Lewis. The author is alive and kicking in the Fiction section, along with other colleagues, alphabetically arranged, and there is his -Main Street, His Arrow Smith, and His Babbitt, etc. But there is no Dodsworth.

I am totally crestfallen. Fuck it, my day so sublime until then had turned into shit. I was told at the desk, the book is out of print. The store can't get it.  I got to get it online.

I consoled myself, with another book of Sinclair Lewis I have not read thus far, and a new hard cover of Jeffrey Archer.  Both my favorite writers. Having finished a self-prescribed course of poetry reading in English, (liked it a lot, very good poets and critics, bravo!)  - Now, I am all set to read some prose writers in English, this Fall.
